The surprising victory of a reformist candidate in Irans presidential election has put Israel in a difficult position as it tries to halt the Iranian nuclear program: With Hasan Rowhani likely to enjoy an international honeymoon, Israel could have a hard time rallying support for new sanctionsor possible military actionagainst its arch-foe, even as it says the clock is ticking on Tehrans march toward nuclear weapons.
The uncertainty facing Israel was evident Sunday in the reactions among its leaders, who welcomed the signs of change in Iran while also warning the world should not be fooled.
Let us not delude ourselves. The international community must not become caught up in wishful thinking and be tempted to relax the pressure on Iran to stop its nuclear program, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

This is simple. If Israel can pull off a small Iranian disaster, that makes the Iranian government look bad, he might be stimulated to spout the typical hate against Israel.
It would clear the air a lot, and dispense illusions of moderation. Really, anything would do that would inspire a typical fanatic to go on a tear against Israel.
A truly moderate Iranian leader would do away with their nuclear weapons program. They’d peacefully get along with their neighbors, would quit helping terrorist organizations, and would instead focus on improving the lives of their citizens.
And what was his name, again?
Yup. The IRGC and the ayatollahs could have rigged this election precisely to dupe the rest of the world into a false sense of security. When they get the bomb, the ‘reformists’ will become expendable.
The election was nothing more than a “Dog and Pony Show.”
That’s possible, but I think the Iranian people are sick and tired of the lock step full Islamic treatment they get.
Iran used to be westernized more than it is today, and I think they’ve about had it with the idiots in charge.
“...surprising victory of a reformist candidate...”
BS. All 6 “candidates” were well-vetted in advance, and approved by the Ass-ya-hola Whatshisname.
The premise of the article is incorrect: There is no “moderate” Iranian President, if the term is to be properly understood. Nothing has changed in that carphole of a country.
That’s what it’s going to take. It’s a pity we didn’t help those folks out a few years ago when they could have used it. Instead, we only help al Quida and the Muslim Brotherhood.
What a load of crap, yet startlingly truthful as it relates to the views of most people around the world.
Yhello! This guy has no real power, just like I’mADinnerJacket. The Ayatollah is the brains behind the operation, and he’s just as nuts as ever.
I agree. A lot of overt help may have been problematic, but it seems we could have done a lot more than we did. Our Putz in Chief didn’t even make favorable statements.
Meanwhile we’re going to arm (and train) al Quida in Syria. I’m so pissed....
Yeah (shaking head), you and me both!
It is to laugh. Hysterically.
The people in the cities “had it” in 2009, but Obama didn’t want to help them, so they got crushed. The people outside the cities are very dedicated to the Ayatollah, however.
Okay, thanks. Good to know actually.
Thanks Olog-hai.

From Joel C. Rosenberg:
Hassan Rowhani is no moderate. He was endorsed by the only Iranian leader ever to publicly call for Israel to be destroyed by nuclear weapons.
Youve really got to hand it to Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The man is one of the most evil tyrants on the face of the earth. He is pursuing nuclear weapons to wipe Israel and the U.S. off the map.
He wants to usher in the caliphate of the Twelfth Imam and bring about the apocalyptic End of Days.
Yet he is desperately trying to prevent Israel or any other country from launching preemptive military strikes and neutralizing Irans nuclear weapons program.
Thus, Khamenei is trying to use the rigged current presidential elections to recast Iran as suddenly moving in a more moderate direction, and thus persuading the West to ease up on economic sanctions and pressure Israel to back off.
And the Western media is totally buying it.
Consider the headlines this morning, all of which are declaring Hassan Rowhani (also spelled Rouhani) as the frontrunner and a moderate who could be the best answer to bringing peace to the world...
