Republicans are "in a demographic death spiral" and will fail in their effort to win the presidency if the party blocks an immigration overhaul, a leading GOP senator said Sunday.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who helped write a bipartisan immigration bill under debate in the Senate, said conservatives who are trying to block the measure will doom the party and all but guarantee a Democrat will remain in the White House after 2016's election.
A Democrat also involved in developing the proposal, Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, went a step further and predicted "there'll never be a road to the White House for the Republican Party" if immigration overhaul fails to pass.

The Democrats and Rush Limbaugh and Lindsey Graham seem to believe the proposed seating layout for the Revolutionary Assembly in France in 1791 is, in fact, the way American politics are organized.
That wasn't so in Jefferson's time, nor in that of LBJ, nor that of Nixon or Reagan! Harry Truman even provided a corollary ~ if you give the people a choice between a real Democrat and a fake Democrat they'll chose the real thing every time.
American political thought is laid out on a bi-modal saddle. All politics is coalition politics, with relatively even sides. We do these things before the elections, not after as in Europe.
Once I get back FR mail I"ll tell you what I can see from the roof of my house.
If the immigration bill becomes law, the Republican Party will dissolve into history, as did the Whigs when they were replaced by the Republican party in 1860. Immmigration is the new face of slavery and the Democrats want to bring back plantation days of yore.
And the Democrats want to help the GOP win the WH!
My next door neighbor is also Hispanic. And he agrees 100% with your next door neighbor.
That weasel Grahamnesty is on my sh.. list for a while.
Recall his suggestion 2+years ago on the Sunday shows that ‘maybe’ we need to amend the US constitution regarding birth-right citizenship.
He and Mccain can go to hell on Syria too.
Why don’t those two drop in themselves and take Cheney with them?
I am sure they’d be welcomed as liberators.
I think many current legal Hispanics believe in honest work, not Obama's/Hillary's something-for-nothing schemes (including crony capitalism).
And why not? Almost all of them consider themselves Americans first -- just like we do. They were either born here or worked their butts off to earn American citizenship. And they're proud of it.
They want their children to grow up and prosper in the United States of America, not some barrio imported from beyond the Rio Grande.
Seems to me, these people have become a forgotten constituency. Well, I guess, we're in the same boat...
Graham is just the paid mouthpiece of the Chamber of Commerce.
Your post is a little bit confusing. Freepmail for you...
If something is not done, I fear that Latinos will continue to vote heavily Democratic--almost as heavily as African-Americans do--and that is certainly not good for those of us who much prefer the Republican Party to the Democratic Party.
I just do not think it is wise--in fact, I am quite certain that it is unwise--to grant legal status to those who are already here illegally, without first securing our southern border. Really securing it.
Over time an opposition party grows up that strives for the same thing.
Again, over time, factions within the main parties become dissatisfied and migrate elsewhere ~ usually to the other party.
Hispanics would do the same as everybody else. They'd demand a space for their 'Hispanic faction' and the Democrats would have to move aside to provide room for them. That would mean a number of black and Jewish politicians would have to give up elective office...................
Guess that won't happen!
The math and the history says it doesn't matter how many people we add to the population, if we want their votes we have to cater to their groups ~ whether religious, cultural, geographical, economic, industrial, educational ~ whatever. Each group wants a place in the coalition ~ and if they don't get it their affiliates will go somewhere else.
Lindsey Graham and the Democrats imagine that 11 million Hispanics will quietly move in and do what the Democrats say to do.
That is nonsense. They are human beings and they will demand a place in the political structure.
They are not likely to get that without some serious politicking over time ~ and certainly they won't get anything unless they show up and vote.
Currently Hispanics vote at a less than 50% rate. Whites vote at 64%. Blacks vote at 69%. With Hispanics and blacks at rough parity in terms of population that means that Blacks have 19% more voters than Hispanics, and they live in more cohesive districts (thanks to their collusion with the Republicans who make sure Democrats get packed into black majority districts). That means Black voting power is effectively double Hispanic voting power under any conditions.
Currently Blacks hold a plurality within the Democrat coalition ~ no other group is as numerous. In effect, they run the party.
This raises some good questions about the Jewish Democrat Senators and Representatives ~ just why is it they think the Democrat party needs to acquire a much larger contingent of folks who were still burning them at the state just a century and a half ago?
The only possible answer is they intend to break the Black stranglehold on the Democrat party by adding tens of millions more Hispanic voters.
It's not the Republicans the leftwingtard white Democrats fear, it's the Republican/Black quasi-coalition in the states that gives Blacks safe districts.
Lindsey probably hasn't got a clue.
It looks like you are on probation. You probably pissed off one of the mods.

***The last time that happened was South Africa. By the time the general populace voted to kick the current guvmint out, more than 80% of the population was illegal immigrants.

Is that you Lindsey? Or maybe you, Jeb?
Would you dispute my assertion?
If so, on what grounds, precisely?
Or are you merely indifferent to the (certain) outcome, if nothing at all is done?
Well Lindsey (or Jeb?), no matter what is done Hispanics will continue to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats. If they are legalized there will simply be more of them voting overwhelmingly Democrat. If “nothing” is done, the number of Hispanics voting will be fewer than would be voting if “something” is done. Also, passing “immigration reform” will likely demoralize the Republican base further.
By the way, your illogical thinking is either like that espoused by Lindsey Graham and Jeb Bush (neither of whom are known as strategic thinkers) or like Rush Limbaugh’s classic “low information voter”.
Why do you believe that?
If they are legalized there will simply be more of them voting overwhelmingly Democrat.
Not necessarily.
The state of Maryland already is wanting to make non-citizens eligible to vote in non-federal elections.
I look for other sttes to follow; and eventually, to want to extend that voting franchise (for non-citizens) to federal elections also.
Also, passing immigration reform will likely demoralize the Republican base further.
It shouldn't.
Not if the legislation is properly crafted, so as to prioritize border security (instead of making it a mere afterthought, as some would prefer).
Foreign invaders need to be stopped. Stop giving them benefits for coming here and breaking our laws
We have no reason to trust anyone in DC
Ask yourself, "Why is there an illegal immigration problem?"
And answer it yourself: "Because the federal government was derelict in its duty."
Now, they want to fix the problem they themselves created -- not by doing the right thing -- but by taking the easy way out.
As to why I think most Hispanics will continue to vote overwhelmingly Democrat—it’s for the same reason that Blacks will continue to vote overwhelmingly Democrat. History and Experience. And that, my low-information friend, surely trumps your magical thinking that Republicans voting for Rubio’s version of immigration reform (Amnesty).
And by the way, my tolerance for nitwits is limited and you’ve used your allotment. I’ll waste no more of my time interacting with you and your uninformed silliness.
That won't add more Democrats but it will sure anger a bunch of them when the Hispanics demand some party offices as well as seats in the legislature ~
I suspect the disputes will be quite vigorous ~ and you'll see more Black and Jewish politicians literally fleeing to Republicans for help.
For some reason the Democrats dismiss out of hand the possibility of getting more voters from the storehouse of 90 million American citizens who don't vote! It could be there's nobody there who is interested in the Democrats.
There's this same problem with Republicans. There's this crowd who really believe they can't get more Republican voters from that storehouse! Yet, without a lot of effort, the Republicans appear to have brought on board another 5 million Republican voters between 2008 and 2012 ~ wasn't enough to win, but that's a large number. Do it again, and the Republicans get a lock on the Presidency!
