Aetna Inc said on Saturday it has notified California's insurance regulator that it plans to stop selling health policies to individual consumers in the state at the end of 2013.

-snip-

But people with individual health coverage with Aetna will have to find alternative coverage by year's end.

-snip-

The move comes as California, the country's most populous state, prepares for the fall launch of a state health exchange authorized by President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act.

A law should be passed that does not allow the insurance company to leave California.

OsamaObamaCare is working just as intended.Remember, boys and girls...a few years back (before he became President...*long before,IIRC) Osama Obama went on record as saying that CanadaCare was his dream for the US but that it would take 10-15 years to put it into effect (I think that was the time span he mentioned).I’ve seen the video.

You know you’re getting the best ~ affirmative action in India does not extend to treating patients.

Neighbor of ours has two kids in training to be doctors. One goes to an expensive American university. They share cadavers ~ two students, one cadaver, 3 years. The other goes to a school in Pakistan. Each student gets a new cadaver each semester.

When it comes to training doctors, the bodies are highly important ~ plus the students in Pakistan can simply walk the streets ~ rather than the rounds ~ and diagnose and treat people on the spot with every imagineable ailment ~ BY THE DOZENS every day. Some of them turn into world class diagnosticians. Some of them don't.

Depends on what you want I guess. Folks going into biomedical research might not need to know anything about human beings.

I had Kaiser for years. My Dr. was very pleasant but let me know that logic didn’t supersede guidelines. Kaiser was very much for ACA, but they are charging more on the exchange.

Tell me why congress can regulate interstate health insurance.
I have Aetna and would have expected a bargain to make up those lost in California.

Didn’t someone say something like you could keep your insurance if you like it?

It’s not just Aetna, United Health and Cigna have also opted out. The excrement is about to hit the rotary actuator here.

“A lot of people are trying to scare you. Let me be clear: if you like your insurance, you’ll be able to keep it.”

My former company just screwed us all out of the retiree insurance plan they arranged for us. Those of us with retiree Medical Accounts will have zero balance at the end of the year due to them taking back the funds. Those who have been retired for years, and are now elderly, now have no insurance and will have to try to get medicare. The reason the company gave for this action: The Affordable Care Act.

..and you’ll need to provide the desk clerk with information on your annual income, because the co-pay is determined by it. Whether it’ll be a direct question or coded on your card, I haven’t learned yet.

Ain’t no “but” there, that was their plan. The California providers are arranged by county, a large number of them are HMO’s that are currently providing MediCal services, and many of the rest are HMO’s. In my county, there’s one PPO and one “Executive PPO” (a PPO with lower than normal reimbursements for out of network coverage). Essentially, Kaiser will become an attractive and competitive option. Their support for ACA has promoted them into the big leagues.

According to the CoverCal handout, Anthem, Blue Shield, and Kaiser will be widely available. The choice of other insurers varies by county. A considerable number of them are organizations that are providing MediCal HMO coverage now.

Strangely, they’ve redone the website since they made the original announcement. The originally had a large booklet that listed the choices for each county. I’m having difficulty locating it on the new site.

It’s scary how prophetic that movie is becoming. I feel so frustrated reading FR these days.
