Minnesota Man, 94, Is Investigated for Nazi Ties

WASHINGTON — After more than three decades in existence, the Justice Department’s Nazi-hunting team is facing what could end up being its last investigation after reports emerged Tuesday that a 94-year-old Ukrainian immigrant in Minnesota had led a Nazi SS unit accused of burning villages during World War II.

In northeast Minneapolis, news crews and curious neighbors milled outside the modest home of Michael Karkoc, who has lived in the United States for more than 60 years, after a report linked him to a Ukrainian SS squad.

The Associated Press reported that wartime documents and interviews with soldiers indicated that Mr. Karkoc commanded a company that massacred civilians, although the records did not point to his direct hand in war crimes.

The Justice Department’s Nazi-hunting unit, which since 1979 has investigated and deported suspected war criminals, refused to say whether it was investigating Mr. Karkoc. The department has not taken any legal action against him, documents show, and officials declined to say whether his case had ever attracted any federal interest.

“While we do not confirm or deny the existence of specific investigations, I can say as a general matter that the Department of Justice continues to pursue all credible allegations of participation in World War II Nazi crimes by U.S. citizens and residents,” said Michael Passman, a Justice Department spokesman.

We should spend a lot of time and money to investigate and deport 94-year-old alleged Nazis, especially since we otherwise do a great job enforcing our immigration laws.

If the old feller is convicted, it will be a very short life sentence I bet.

Don’t they think that manpower today can used to investigate all this corruption

He will be able to stall the legal process until he dies naturally.

I will be very happy when all this is over. An 18 year old in 1945 would be 86 now. Just about everybody who was an adult when WW2 ended are dead now.

Meanwhile, we will NEVER see a similar hunt for people who were Communist Party members under Stalin, Mao, or Pol Pot.

The Justice Department’s Nazi-hunting unit

Good thing they are hunting for those dangerous, elderly Nazis and leaving the radical muslims alone.

I wonder just how many other aged 90+ soldiers were interviewed?

I noted the same thing on a post yesterday. I'm amazed how AP and the DOJ were able to dig up allegations and documents on this guy - from 70 years ago. Nazism is a dead, non-existent threat today, yet these same Gov't/Media sources can not say a word about the threat from thousands of members of a very real and dangerous present religious-political sect operating today within our borders.

“The Justice Department’s Nazi-hunting unit...”

Now, will this unit be disbanded once there is no chance that any World War II era Nazis are still alive?

I can help them get a start:

They are saying that this man lied on his immigration papers decades ago and can still be tried for such action.

Yet the Boston Marathon bomber was engaging in terrorist activity at the time of his loyalty oath and he is granted the full rights of US citizenship without revocation.

Obama has a hardon for Islamic jihadists.

Mr. Karkoc commanded a company

In 1943 Mr. Karkoc would have been about 24 years old. Wouldn't that have been a little young to be a company commander especially since the Nazi military would have been filled with more experienced officers from WW-I?

This guy didn't 'lead' or 'order' squat, SS or otherwise. He was fricken Lieutenant, either a Untersturmführer (2nd Lt) , or at most a Obersturmführer (1st Lt).

Good point. Almost no SS officers had died by 1943, the war was kind of a garden party (especially in the East), and battlefield promotions were unheard of.
