Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano weighed in on the NSA intelligence leaks on Friday, telling NY1 that fears over government surveillance were overblown.
I think people have gotten the idea that theres an Orwellian state out there that somehow were operating in. Thats far from the case, she told Errol Louis during an appearance on Road to City Hall.
Despite civil liberties advocates fears that monitoring efforts have gone too far, there are lots of protections built into the system, Ms. Napolitano said, pointing to a privacy office embedded in her own department that is constantly reviewing our policies and procedures. She further stressed the court review system.
No one should believe that we are simply going willy-nilly and using any kind of data that we can gather, she said.
Still, she acknowledged the federal government hasnt done the best job of keeping the public informed about how it is treating the enormous amounts of personal information that could potentially be used in intelligence gathering.
I think we need to do a better job of explaining to the American people exactly what is kept, what are the real restrictions on howIm just talking now for DHS, Department of Homeland Securityhow we use it, how long we can keep it, how we share it, all those thing, she explained....

Doubleplusgood duckspeak on Napolitano’s part.
Of course she'd deny it. It just makes for doubleplusgood Orwell.
I’ve been up all night, scared about this stuff, but that sweet bedtime story is sure to lull me off to sleep, Janet.
I can call you Janet, can’t I? I mean, we’re becoming rather intimate these days, you know, what with you reading all my emails, and me having planted that little hidden camera and mic you haven’t found yet in your bedroom.
Quite a show last night, BTW.
Just the mere incidence that she would remark on this tells you that we should worry.
Did someone ask her to define ‘Orwellian state’?
I’ve had occasion to hear this woman speak and I don’t think she has the intellectual capacity to do so. She’s a Peter Principle appointee.
Further, she’s a known liar. Why would anyone believe her when she’ll lie under oath?
“No one should believe that we are simply going willy-nilly and using any kind of data that we can gather, she said.”
We don’t. If they were they would’ve been aware of and catching terrorists that even Russia knew were a problem and seeing all the drug lords coming over here from Mexico, and the enormous amount of criminal illegals.
But no, that is not their game.
Well, there you have it then. The head of the Orwellian state’s department of keeping the proles in line said that the state is not Orwellian. Dissent is a sign of mental illness. How many fingers am I holding up?
About a month ago I was going to send Janet Napolitano a letter complaining about her office, but before I could get it mailed off, I received a response to it from her office, is that a bad sign?
Santa then denied the existence of Rudolph and his sleigh were used in the transportation of Christmas presents.
Nope. Prism seems to be working very efficiently.
And you wouldn't be talking to the public about it now if you hadn't been exposed. Most transparent administration in history...
If the IRS was targeting Tea Party members, how do we know the NSA isn’t listening in on conservative groups under the guise of “extremists”?
He put the ALL the elitist ass clowns on the defense.
Who you going to believe, Big Sis, Diane Feinstein, King Barry, Peter King, Goober Graham, or that wiretapping fool, Uncle Rupert who has his paid shills like Britt Hume and Charlie KRAUThammer crapping all over the Fourth Amendment?
Well, she would know....
Guess we were all wrong.
