The UN is about to go to war for the first time in its history after the Security Council voted unanimously to intervene to fight rebels in the Congo.
Around 3,000 UN troops wearing the blue insignia, are being deployed to the central African nation which has been wracked by years of civil war and lawlessness.
The UN has led a 14-year-long peacekeeping in a bid to end the ethic conflict which was sparked by the genocide in neighbouring Rwanda when thousands of Hutus fled into the Congo to evade justice.
...
It will be the first time that the UN itself will be in direct control of a fighting force, responsible for the tactics on the ground, troop deployments and air strikes.
The force will be made up of soldiers from South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi and is under the command of Brazilian general Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz, who is credited with dismantling criminal gangs in Haiti in 2007.
It will be deployed against M23 (March 23) rebels in the east of the country.

The UN is about to implode and become a token organization.
Not that it ever HAD legitimacy ... just that now, people are not giving it the free ride it's had.
All politicians and ruling/governing/legislative 'groups' are on notice.
Atlas is doing a little more than shrugging.
What could go wrong?
Almost everything!
Then a happy Fathers Day to your father (in this world or the next).
Thanks.
Isn’t this just training and practice for when the UN comes to America to try to take away our guns with the approval of American leftists? At which point, it will be target practice time for all patriotic Americans.
I initially though this was a Homer Simpson post. First time?
Do you live in a actual city doc, not some "metropolitan area". What I don't need is 10 mil. tough and outstanding street fighters with a centuries old grudge against white people. I'll take our home grown morons with a centuries old grudge against white people.
“Are you referring to the White Africans?”
Nope, blacks. They are fantastic people who want a chance for their families. They are strong pro-family. My reading of them is that they would love an opportunity to live in our big cities and open businesses. These people are not ANC commies. I’m guessing as a group that they would be 80% + conservative or libertarian. We didn’t poll on politics just economics.
“Wasnt Korea technically a UN op?”
That was the first thing that came to mind when I read the article too. However, as with most of these joint ventures, Korea was primarily a US show and US forces plus the rest were under US command.
I’ll have to take your word on it, as I have never been to S.A. I hope your assessment is correct. The Earth needs zero more commies.
Ah, a chance for the UN to rape and pillage!
“The Earth needs zero more commies.”
For sure. Take my assessment with a grain of salt. Africa, for me, is a rare side trip. I prefer contracts with UK clients.
Those rebels are going to get awfully bored after they ambush these morons a couple of hundred times.
Hopefully the UN will keep sending in replacements, the first wave won't last very long.
They could try a Mexican General after Santa Cruz is sent home in a box.
Once they got here the CPUSA would make short work of them.
ANC has nothing to give those folks, but the CPUSA is in control of the US welfare state, and has lots to offer.
I have my doubts the world will really be watching
and then we didn’t let MacArthur and his replacement finish the job.
No it won’t.
And that’s why I am afraid that, sooner or later, they will need real trained troops.
And that’s when US troops will get involved.
I agree. Not many folks know that the U. N. has satellite offices across this nation. Unplug them and send them packing too.
