A local second grade teacher is out of a job, but not for anything she did in the classroom. Carie Charlesworth is a victim of domestic violence and her school district considers her a liability and too unsafe to have around. Charlesworth was fired by Holy Trinity School in January after an incident involving her ex-husband.
Theyve taken away my ability to care for my kids., said Charlesworth. Its not like I can go out and find a teaching job anywhere.
((snip))
While Charlesworths husband went to jail on two felony charges she says she felt like a criminal too. And thats what it felt like, the kids and I were being punished for something we didnt even do, she told NBC 7 San Diego.

A company here in Texas gave their founder/CEO $25 million to go away, yet he kept making noises that he still owned the place and he could come and go as he pleased. The company hired a security firm who placed me in their offices at night in case he fulfilled his promise. Yes, I was armed. If I mentioned their name, you’d probably recognize them, and yes, they were a religious type organization. And no, he never showed up.
I’ll bet you a dollar that there’s a law somewhere that covers this. Especially in California.
"Quietly", is a good idea.
While I sympathize with her when your life problems follow you to work to the point they need to go on lock down and somebody winds up with 2 felonies you’ve become a liability. If you really think that certain somebody is going to follow you to work, so much so that you warn your boss to be “on the lookout” that’s probably a good day to call in sick and get your life back under control.
Considering his history, it's likely she will end up as a homicide statistic........
Normally I would recommend home protection but in California.....who knows.
She's better off moving to a CPL friendly state and starting all over....
Yea, you're absolutely right and that is California.
In other states which have open CPL laws and Stand Your Ground laws, the members of those schools would likely be more supportive and protective of her teacher status and willing to stand by her........
While dating the future Mrs. Lucky, I generally carried a pistol in my pocket.
Good for you but I might suggest you go back to law school. But let me save you a first semester of tuition by mentioning that California is an At Will state.............
Did you get your JD out of a box of Cracker Jack?
It is a sad situation, but she had best spend her time figuring out another job, and I doubt it will be teaching.
vaudine
Jeez, can you read? I said I wish I was a lawyer.
See my post #31.
I can read, apparently you can’t.
As someone else mentioned, teachers, especially private school teachers, are generally on contracts that have to be renewed annually. That is because, if the enrollment declines, they have to reduce staffing. Since the diocese has been paying her and will continue to pay her until August (probably the end of her contract), technically she is not being fired - her contract is not being renewed. There is no law I have ever seen that would require a private employer to renew a contract that has expired, especially with an employee whose presence could pose a danger to the staff and students at the site.
Are you sure you weren't just glad to see her?
You don't have to be a lawyer to know what "At Will" employment means.............
Huh?
For starters, she picked the wrong man to be her husband. Then, she had kids with him.
That's two easy ones she did wrong.
“While I sympathize with her when your life problems follow you to work to the point they need to go on lock down...”
It’s kind of hard for me to find a balance when the schools go into ‘lockdown’ over a pop-tart a keychain or a nerf gun.
This is California, after all.
We’re in such an upside-down state right now that none of us really knows black from white. I remember a time that I could judge right from wrong, but now it’s all murky.
So it’s all her fault then that she was abused? Great. I bet women are to blame when they get raped too.
If the “domestic violence advocates” are upset about this, they may want to look into how CPS, in various states, treat women with abusive husbands. Thousands of kids are stolen by those monsters because the mother “failed to protect them against the abusive husband/father”. It’s a routine practice and it’s against the law, but they still have thousands of kids in custody for it.
