The CIA’s deputy director plans to resign and will be replaced by White House lawyer and agency outsider Avril D. Haines, Director John O. Brennan said Wednesday. Haines, who will succeed career officer Michael Morell on Aug. 9, has served for three years as President Obama’s deputy counsel in charge of national security issues and as legal adviser to the National Security Council. Although she has never worked inside the intelligence agency, “she knows more about covert action than anyone in the U.S. government outside of the CIA,” Brennan said in an interview.

The list of prominent news people with close White House relations includes ABC News President Ben Sherwood, who is the brother of Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, a top national-security adviser to President Obama. His counterpart at CBS, news division president David Rhodes, is the brother of Benjamin Rhodes, a key foreign-policy specialist. CNN’s deputy Washington bureau chief, Virginia Moseley, is married to Tom Nides, who until earlier this year was deputy secretary of state under Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Further, White House press secretary Jay Carney’s wife is Claire Shipman, a veteran reporter for ABC. And NPR’s White House correspondent, Ari Shapiro, is married to a lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, who joined the White House counsel’s office in April.
Biden’s current communications director, Shailagh Murray (a former Post congressional reporter), is married to Neil King, one of the Wall Street Journal’s top political reporters.
NPR’s Michele Norris has both recused and removed herself from her job as a result of a conflict. She stayed on the air as co-host of “All Things Considered” in 2004 but refrained from reporting on or discussing politics when her husband, Broderick Johnson, went to work for Sen. John Kerry’s presidential campaign that year. In 2008, she stayed on the job and reported on the campaign while Johnson was an unpaid adviser to Obama’s campaign after NPR deemed his status too informal to affect Norris.

This type of government agency partisanship is common in many countries but basically new to the US. What it produces will not be welcomed by its proponents. Agencies may well align against them effectively eliminating their influence and support from those agencies. In such environment it ultimately boils down to who has the most credible and reliable means of retaliation. Usually it is the country’s intelligence and military communities.
I don’t think this administration realizes the gravity of what they’re doing. Agencies aren’t fungible like a cabinet position or judicial nomination. They have their own culture and priorites.
For partisan control of agencies to be successful usually requires a free-wheeling covert organization operating to vigorously quell resistance such as the Soviets had with the NKVD. Perhaps such an organization already exists? The death of William Colby and near-death of Sen Inhoffe (OK) during the Clinton admin makes me suspect it does exists.
Agreed. My impression of Brennan is a very sinister individual who believes the ends justify the means,laws are regulations notwithstanding.

Repubs have crawled under their desks, hands over their heads and quivering in fear due to the odongo PRISM weapon. Blackmail is a powerful tool against a sitting politician, especially gutless ones to start with. It would not be surprising to find out PRISM was used to take out Herman Cain, Patreas, Romney and our new Benedict Arnold: John Roberts. They all know if they say anything, or don’t cooperate, they will likely be next. Odongo has em right where he wants em.
