Honeywell introduces city-controlled thermostat system for homes
St. Paul Pioneer Press ^ | 06/11/2013 | Julio Ojeda-Zapata

Honeywell has announced a new Wi-Fi-controlled thermostat that is intended to be distributed by municipalities instead of purchased at retail by consumers in order to better manage energy consumption across a town or city.

South Sioux City, Neb., will be the first community to deploy the new thermostat to help its 13,000 residents manage electricity costs, which are said to have risen steadily there in the past three years.

In the future, other municipalities will recruit residents to reduce energy consumption when demand spikes, a strategy known as automated demand response, or ADR.

As part of this, the residents would receive the $150 Honeywell Total Connect Comfort with ADR thermostat for free so that utilities can link to the home devices and reduce that residence's energy as needed.

Such an approach can help avoid brownouts and blackouts on the hottest days of the year, when power-grid stability is threatened.

Honeywell's thermostat can be controlled with a Total Connect Comfort app, available in versions for Apple iOS and Google Android devices.

Honeywell is based in Morris Township, N.J., but its division responsible for the Total Connect Comfort technology is based in Golden Valley.

Yeah.... and LORAL got that sweet deal to take over the IRRIDIUM satellites.

They were supposed to enable Cell phone comms from anywhere to anywhere, due to their ‘low’ orbit.

Wonder what they are being used for now ?

We’ve had utility controlled electric water heater shutoffs here in Indiana for decades. You get a small credit on your bill every month for having it. Only kicks in on the hottest A/C days when you really don’t notice it anyway.

The Amish are the only ones who got it right. They're untouchable.

No, not entirely. They still need fuel for cooking and heating. Land and implements for growing their own food. In this day and age, we are all pretty dependent creatures. Could you imagine what this country would become if all petroleum products disappeared tomorrow?

What’s next, government controlled flushers for your toilets?

They already do. Toilets are limited to 1.2 gallon tanks. That's why newer toilets don't flush as cleanly as older ones with the bigger tanks.

Free Thermostat. Also included free mini-web cam and microphone. No extra charge for drone monitoring.

yep
When people find out about that, they'll grab their obamafone to call and warn their friends.

I remember my school turning down the heat too much. Everyone quickly learned that you could hang a wet paper towel on the thermostat and be nice and toasty.

Yes, because city governments are so fantastic at synchronizing street lights that they really need to be in charge of everyone’s thermostats.

No, not entirely. They still need fuel for cooking and heating. Land and implements for growing their own food.

The church owns all the land, and the land is chosen wisely. They have wood for heat and cooking. They grow their own.
They have their non-gas/nonelectric farm equipment, and can use their horses to pull it. They breed their own horses.

They're no part of this evil world. They've done everything possible to avoid what's happening to us (the "English"). They're slaves to no one. In fact, they're exempt from obomacare, too, because of their faith.

I see they’ve got the language of the police state down already. This isn’t the city “controlling” your electricity usage, they are just “helping” you “manage your costs”. They’re doing you a favor by taking your freedom away, foolish citizen!

Thermostats can be fooled, either by an ice pack or a heating pad, depending on the results desired.

First it’s “voluntairly” let them install a “smart meter” except where they require a “smart meter”. Then give “free” thermostats controlled by the utility company. Then require everyone on the grid to have a “smart meter” and a utility company (computer controlled) thermostat. The long range plan is also any who are off the grid out in the boondocks will be moved into the cities, vast areas of the US won’t need electricity, only those involved in forestry, mining and agriculture will live in rural areas and they will most likely live in compounds. Of course their thermostats will be controlled by a computer.

they told us that the thermostat was controlled by somebody in California.

Big box stores such as Home Depot have their utilities controlled by their headquarters.

Isn't this how the Soviet Union controlled the heat in their block apartment housing? You had the choice of opening all the windows (if you could) to keep from roasting or slowly freezing to death. Usually it was the latter as money for heating was scarce or the heating system itself was broken, or you lived on the lower floors or away from the entry ducts.

Such a system should work well for the Union of Soviet Socialist States.

Yeah, I know. If someone can hack into your Nest account they can tell when you’re not home.
