In 2007, John McCains comprehensive immigrant-legalization bill failed after opponents flooded the Senate with calls, shutting down the switchboard. Despite considerable press hype, the bill didnt even muster a majority on the crucial cloture vote.
It wont be that easy this time. For one thing, they have a better switchboard, Im told. For another, the Republican consultantse.g. Gillespie, Rovewho helped Mitt Romney lose the 2012 election have taken their own failure as an excuse to push what theyve wanted all alonga business-pleasing immigration policy guaranteeing a supply of inexpensive labor from abroad and a stream of campaign donations to pay Republican consultants. It beats rethinking the rest of the GOP agenda.
In fact, despite all the talk of polarization and Citizens United, the big money in the immigration fight almost unanimously favors a bipartisan, legalization-first bill. Kochs included. The GOP donor class is asserting itself....Its spotted what it thinks is an intersection of crude self-interest, high-minded tolerance, partisan strategy and libertarian philosophy.
One of the more influential members of this donorist class is Rupert Murdoch, which means that FOX News has for all intents and purposes switched sides, giving immigration comprehensivists a monopoly in the MSMfive networks to none. As goes Murdoch, so goes Hannity.
If you are a Republican who worries that a flood of low-skilled immigrants would drive down wages and make America an uglier place, where the rich have cheap servants but even diligent unskilled work doesnt afford a life of dignitywell, were sorry. Weve booked our Republican for the panel this weekSenator McCain!

Exactly.

Our “friends” have been betraying us for 25 years.
There is no clear solution for this.
If Amnesty passes, Conservatives and Republicans will be voted out of power for generations by the new Black and Hispanic Socialist majority.
If we leave the Republican Party, both the Conservatives and the GOP will become Third Parties with even less political power.
If we stay in the Republican Party, we will have to continue to give up every principle we believe in.
I have friends and family-—my husband’s family-—who just will not get worked up about this, because if they have an “R” after their names, surely they’re doing what’s right for the country. We shouldn’t be attacking “our side.”

Do a search on Agenda 21 / Turtle Island. Then ponder all the new bunkers built under DC.
With the word “really” in the question...I am not sure of the answer....
Very well put, Westbrook. Since most appears lost at this point, even in the House, why not include a provision in the bill allowing states to enforce this and any other federal law regarding the border, immigration, guest Visas, etc. whether or not the feds do so.
If Rubio really trusts the Feds to enforce the border, he shouldn’t have a problem with this. I don’t expect such an amendment to pass, but it’s worth a shot.
Revolt is coming.
'Do you believe there will be a "Cornyn amendment" to the immigration bill that is permitted to be voted on in the Senate (before the July 4 recess), and when it is voted down will effectively scuttle the entire immigration bill in its tracks (i.e. "poison pill")'?
Or said another way, do you believe in unicorns that purge skittles as they fly over rainbows?
Damn but you’ve gotten so much more cynical in your old age.
They're worse than the commie liberals, aren't they?
Yes, I’m aware of all that. Thanks.
I think the evil bastards have no souls. Evil eats their souls away.
I’m no Cornyn fan, but I think he and Cruz are planting seeds of destruction of this bill in the House version. (I also think that Boner might screw that up...)
Obama and the Democrats are mired in scandal and what is the most important thing on the Republican side? To pass one of the keystone legislation of the Democrats...
You can definitely scratch Rand off that list.
20M + illegal criminals will gladly give the RAT party a lock on political Power.
I would get banned if I wrote what I thought about the evil GOP-e.
Yes. They are.
They’re the worst plague that could ever have been visited by Satan in the form of a plague. They’re murdering America. At first it was ‘merely’ babies...now it’s the older and in many cases the Americans whose brains are still functioning.
They won’t lose office until the 30 million criminals are given voting right s and Pedro or Juanita is elected. These guys are so stupid to think they are immune.
Not soon enough. Alas I feel we are doomed, too many just don’t care and even with confronted with the facts tell me things like, “it is just to tiring to think about”, or “politics is so boring” , and my favorite “I just vote how my spouse/relatives tells me I don’t have time to stay up on things” .
I give us about 16 years if this passes. 4 election cycles. We will slide up until that point when all of theses criminals bazillion kids over 2 years old come of voting age. We can only hope that apathy works both sides of the fence.
