Reminiscent of the ole party line telephone systems of the 50s and 60s.

Some of those party lines had 6-8 ‘members’. If one phone rang, they all did — but they had individual rings to signal which recipient should pick up. Of course, that didn’t prevent the party-line busybodies from picking up and listening in on the conversations.

The main difference, I suppose, is that all members of the party line group knew others might be listening in. Probably, those like General Petreaus only found out later.

Also, in Russia in the 70s. I'd heard about a ringing phone triggering the listening device but I didn't believe it until our phone rang. Very low tech and obvious but what did you expect from Russia.
