"i thought Starbuck was a guy..." In the original TV series, he was. Back then, Starbuck was played by Dirk Benedict; he's one of us, and IIRC, was friends with Breitbart.
When the new Battlestar Galactica came out, they changed Starbuck to a female. Benedict penned an article about it and the feminization of Hollywood that was originally up on Breitbart's Big Hollywood site:
Dirk Benedict - Starbuck: Lost in Castration

The secret was that Starbuck had already been to Earth ~ and been resurrected with the Cylon resurrection ship, but as a female. She forgot that. Then, she went there again. Crashed. Got resurrected and forgot where she'd been. Nobody else knew either, nor did they remember having started off in 'that' Earth ~ but they'd all been there and gotten resurrected many times.
Like all good machines they drank huge quantities of alcohol ~ and never got drunk.
None of this is inconsistent with the original story line.
