After a grueling three-day competition, Nicole Kelly was named Miss Iowa on Saturday. The 23-year-old will go on to compete in the Miss America pageant, where she will speak about the importance of overcoming disabilities.
Kelly was born without her left forearm, according to her biography on MissIowa.com.
As I grew up I learned to counterbalance the initial stares I received from people with an outgoing personality that would not give into no, she writes on the Iowa pageant site. This means that I tried everything. From baseball, to dance, to diving - there is nothing I would not try. I found my passion within a world where I was giving people permission to stare: the stage.

Yeah I would hope the Admins would remove that. That’s not what we’re about here.
lol!
Reminds me of one of the few MASH episodes where Charles Emerson Winchester comes off looking like a good guy. “Well I can strike the proper keys - YOU can PLAY the piano.” (Or something like that.)
I was born and raised in Iowa..
that was a stupid comment, and I hope you get banned for it
She is a blessing, what else can I say?
I don’t know much about her, but if she’s functioning in society, she’s as qualified as anyone else. She may be a great person and capable of being a great representative for the organization. I don’t categorize her as unqualified on the face of it.
He was.
No he wasn’t, the comment was removed.
Good for her!
I knew a girl in college who had lost one of her hands in an accident when she was a young girl. One night a bunch of us were hanging around, drinking beer, etc., and a guy asked her, “Well, then how do you shave under your arms?” Without batting an eye, she said, “I hold the razor in my hand.”
Beautiful girl.
Same here. Iowa proud (and Iowa stubborn).
This girl, and the rest of them for that matter, are judged on interview skills and talent, fitness (used to be called swimsuit), and poise.
Having an arm, or not, is irrelevant. There have been some Miss Americas who are not beauties in the traditional classic sense.
These girls also rack up some serious scholarship dollars.
Can you even imagine the Miss America Pageant stripping a black woman of the crown for posing in the nude? Today, they would call her a hero.
Sympathy vote?
You are so wrong.
You must be one heck of a party to live with, given the attitude you display here.
He was just immature. You know the type: Off-the-wall comments to get attention. That sort.
He probably went into politics later in life.
You are so wrong.
Prove me wrong.
“Prove me wrong. “
Prove yourself right.
You and I both know there’s no way to prove or disprove it. It’s only opinions on this subject.
Well, just look at the sympathy votes here! And don’t you call anybody “cripple”!
Pretty girl. I came damn close to losing my left hand and arm a couple of years ago. Still have it, but it doesn’t work very well. No more saxoffoning, though...
