Verizon’s Top Secret Deal With Pentagon Was Made Public in Regular, Annual Filing With SEC.

Verizon, the phone company whose disclosure of customer data to the federal government is at the center of the furor over cooperation by technology companies with top-secret national security programs, has offered a precise, clear, but little-noticed public explanation of why it did what it did. The Verizon explanation is not in the vague and cryptic memo the company issued last week after the Guardian exposed its program. It came, instead, in the company’s annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, included in Verizon’s annual report to shareholders.

“Precise” and “clear”, hah. It’s deliberately vague, and this writer is a liar for saying it’s not.

Verizon needed FCC approval to sell part of its wireless business to a British company, Vodaphone.

This author needs to get his facts straight. Verizon is not selling, but wants to buy.

Right, did I miss the part of the filing that said we have agreed to turn over every phone call, email, etc?

I thought the Sun went out of business, or was it just the print edition?

Hmmmm, BILLIONS of dollars in contracts between Verizon and the Federal Gov, not to mention the need for approval of Verizon's expansion plans, but I am sure these little issues had nothing to do with Verizon's cooperation in this matter.

I cannot believe that any company so open to sabotage would voluntarily attack it's customers. Look at cell towers, they alone are wide open in the middle of nowhere targets, no I am becoming convinced that Verizon was told to play ball or discover the real meaning of ‘regulations’ and go belly up.

XZ’s notice did not provide any info. what was of interest was the statement about dedicated fiber to VZ’s operations center. This sounds like access to call and billing type data and not content itself. what I want to know is if they have access to content itself without a subpoena. I doubt it.
