How the Washington Post Lost the PRISM Exclusive [media bias]

Barton Gellman posted a story cobbled from his chat transcripts with Snowden late Sunday, which contained this exchange concerning the whistleblower's conditions to keep the story the Post's:

To effect his plan, Snowden asked for a guarantee that The Washington Post would publish — within 72 hours — the full text of a PowerPoint presentation describing PRISM, a top-secret surveillance program that gathered intelligence from Microsoft, Facebook, Google and other Silicon Valley giants. He also asked that The Post publish online a cryptographic key that he could use to prove to a foreign embassy that he was the document’s source.

I told him we would not make any guarantee about what we published or when. (The Post broke the story two weeks later, on Thursday. The Post sought the views of government officials about the potential harm to national security prior to publication and decided to reproduce only four of the 41 slides.)

Snowden replied succinctly, “I regret that we weren’t able to keep this project unilateral.” Shortly afterward he made contact with Glenn Greenwald of the British newspaper the Guardian.

Will history record that a 29 year old with a conscience risked everything to save his country from tyranny?

Yes..unless a dictator rewrites history, which is still a very real possibility, given the level of intimidation used for leverage in this corrupt environment.

You can imagine this scene...probably the number two story of the year (behind the IRS), and the Washington Post declines it. That says volumes.

They could have run a three-pager over the entire story. This regulates them back down into the level of a newspaper from Macon, Topeka, Orlando, or Flagstaff.

So the Washingtoon Compost wanted to hold the story until it checked on the damage it would cause? There must be a democrat in office.

Does anyone know if Snowden’s “girl friend” is a Chinese national or ethnically Chinese?

Question for all of us: If Snowden had blown the whistle when Bush (or any other Republican) was president, would we view him as a hero or a traitor?

A better question: If this had happened with Bush in office, what would we be hearing from the State-Run Media this morning?

You mean "relegates" ?

relegate v: "Consign or dismiss to an inferior rank or position"

Your question is rhetorical since the answer is so obvious.

I consider Snowden a hero of the first order, no matter who’s in office. The Fourth Amendment applies to both political parties.

There is also the possibility he was working for the Chinese and leaked the information on their behalf, right before the Chinese Prime Minister’s visit.
Though my only evidence is that he’s in Hong Kong, just before his identity is revealed.

"Common Core", anyone? The standards could easily be expanded to include social studies/history.

I can't really believe that he's going to stay in Hong Kong.

Snowden said he chose HK because it still respects individual liberties and freedom of speech.

He also said that "they" will "get" you if they really want to... it's only a matter of time.

Snowden's demeanor and ability to speak clearly and succinctly certainly doesn't indicate that he's an idiot. On the contrary, he seemed so rational that I'm wondering if there's more to the story than just a fed-up Patriot.

Color me skeptical...

If I remember correctly we freepers saw beyond all the legislation that was supposed to protect us from terrorism and saw the potential for abuse so I’m thinking hero.

One told The Daily Telegraph: “They were here about four months and he didn’t come out much. He had a lot of boxes in his garage which blocked it off and there was just a little gap to walk through. His girlfriend was, I’d say, in her 20s with blonde hair.”

(snip)

Mr Snowden’s mother, Wendy, is listed as working as chief deputy clerk at the federal court in Baltimore.

By apparent coincidence that is the same court where members of the media petitioned for open access to the military trial of Bradley Manning, the US soldier accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of secret documents to WikiLeaks.
