I have some questions about this...

First, and perhaps most important -- is she a Muslim?

Is the San Jose fire department's hazmat team so incompetent that they can't distinguish vinegar or ethanol from rubbing alcohol? (Hell, I believe I could make that determination by taste and smell alone.)

Since the act was witnessed by a customer, a Starbucks manager and possibly as many as two baristas, it's pretty clear she did something. Wouldn't she be guilty of food tampering at the very least?

Finally, if you live in San Jose do you sleep well at night?

Don’t most businesses like this have security cameras, that in part capture the activity near the cash registers?

LOL--necessary to prove guilt.

Let’s assume she wasn’t intentionally trying to ‘poison’ the customers.

What does that leave? (using Occams Razor)

She steals OJ from her employer all the time, to supply her home. She had some bottles that had been in her fridge for a long time. So... she took them to work with her to ‘exchange’ them for Fresh bottles.

So, (if true) while she’s a crook, she’s just not an attempted murderer.

Its amazing that she didn’t face some type of charge. It doesn’t matter what her intent was. The act was willful and wanton and done with reckless disregard for life. That is a crime. Its how they charge drunk drivers who kill people. Most of them don’t intend to do it but they drank and drove. Same with this woman — she did something that she should have known would harm people. She should have been charged with something.

Is no one troubled that she switched out the bottles at all? A chemist??? And what undetected horrors might lurk within? At a MINIMUM, product tampering should be charged. She had no business helping Starbucks restock their shelves. So what if a customer would spit out the product based on its taste. Who is to say that the damage wouldn’t already be done? Something stinks about this and it isn’t the orange juice.

Her name sounds Armenian. According to the Company, Armenia is 98.7% Christian and 1.3% nature worship. Mooselimb penetration is zilch.

It appears she's nothing but a petty thief who swapped her own spoiled orange juice for fresh juice and got caught and subsequently put through the wringer by an incompetent police chemist unable to distinguish between isopropanol and ethanol.

Behbehanian was booked and released several days later on May 2 from the Elmwood Correction Facility, Santa Clara County’s jail for women in Milpitas, although she was never charged.

How did that happen? "booked...County’s jail...released several days later...never charged" I thought it was necessary that a person be charged with a crime before you went to the lockup. Something sounds hinky. She never filed a suit for "false imprisonment", payback to the DA for dropping charges (that were never filed)?

Under the proper conditions, orange juice containing sugar will produce ethyl alcohol which can produce ketones like acetone. Acetone is found in the blood stream of diabetics with uncontrolled blood sugar. It is produced as a metabolic product of sugar. It is therefore possible to find both ethyl alcohol and acetone under naturally occurring circumstances.

Isopropyl alcohol is not produced by fermentation of sugars, rather it is produced by combining water and propene in a hydration reaction. It may also be produced by hydrogenating acetone. Similarly, isopropyl alcohol can be oxidized to acetone. Thus a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and alcohol could co-exist as a mixture that would not form naturally in OJ.

Regards,
GtG

She didn’t work at the Starbucks. The Contra Costa article said she removed two juice bottles from a Starbucks bag, placed them in the open air cooler, and left the store. The bottles’ safety caps were unsealed. Something doesn’t smell right, and it’s not expired orange juice. And, she was a chemist. Trial run? (Although the quiet suburban middle class area seems like an odd target.)
