Imo, he didn’t have any need to pose as a foreign student.
That is likely the better view. In any event, the issue may be down to his attendance at Occidental. It appears those were unsettled years for him and it seems possible it may have been a time he was cut off from supervision or the support of any network.

His entire history has answered that question and surprised us at every turn. He could easily structure a history if he is unburdened with the obligation to leave a evidentiary trail accessbile to public scrutiny.

Perhaps by simply slapping down a foreign passport with a name other than "O" along with a sad story about the rest of his records or even explaining away his high school name.
