Five dead in Santa Monica shooting rampage
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 7, 2013 | By Andrew Blankstein, Robert Faturechi and Joel Rubin

A heavily armed gunman killed four people Friday in a rampage through the streets of Santa Monica that ended when police fatally shot him at a college library where students had been studying for exams.

By Friday evening, investigators were still working to piece together the confusing string of incidents that unfolded about noon along Pico Boulevard and on the campus of Santa Monica College.

Authorities had not yet released the name of the gunman or the victims and declined to discuss what may have spurred the rampage. For hours the campus remained on lockdown as police methodically searched buildings for additional victims and possible other suspects. At a press conference held after nightfall, a Santa Monica police official said investigators believed the gunman had acted alone. The official also corrected an earlier police report that six victims were killed and said that a "person of interest" taken into custody had been cleared of any involvement.

The first signs of trouble came about 11:50 a.m., when gunshots rang out at Kansas and Yorkshire avenues, a quiet neighborhood nestled along the Santa Monica Freeway.

Firefighters would later find the bodies of two men inside the house. Police sources, who requested anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, said the men were Samir Zawahri, 55, the owner of the house, and one of his adult sons. A second son is suspected of being the shooter, the sources said. . .

I can’t believe they are studying for final exams. My daughter is two full weeks into the first summer semester already....

“Zawahri is not not a Christian name.”

I cannot speak to that. All I was saying is that “Samir” is a name used by people who regard themselves as Christian for many generations, and I was suggesting that we should not jump to the conclusion based on the name that the perpetrator here was a Muslim.

I know full well that that Zawahiri is the name of OBL’s former number two, but I do not know what the name means or whether it is held exclusively by Muslims. If you have further expertise I would be interested in hearing more.

I know Lebanese Christians in Ohio named Zawahri. I believe it is a place name, like a lot of surnames.

The fact that the police don’t want to discuss the case = Muslim.

***Those new gun laws are really working in CA./s***

New? AR-15s have been banned in Cali since 1989.

I was not discussing the police and their willingness to discuss the case. I was simply saying that we should not jump to the conclusion that the perpetrator was a Muslim. I know Christians from Christian families with the name Samir. I have no experience with the name Zawahri (beyond knowing that Zawahiri is the name of OBL’s number two).

I see from post 23 that jjotto knows Lebanese Christians with the name Zawahri.

It is not a good idea to jump to the conclusion that because the police will not discuss the case that necessarily the perpetrator was a Muslim. Just for emphasis I will repeat - jump to the conclusion. Is there any chance that he was a Muslim? Of course. Is there any chance that he considered himself a Christian? Of course. We need more information in this case than his father’s name and the perception that the police are not talking about it.

OK, txhurl, but I’m NOT going to move along now. I’ll wait for more information before I come to a conclusion.

You wrote: "Another gun free zone....."

From the article: "Campus police intercepted the gunman on the edge of campus and exchanged gunfire with him, authorities said."

ALL islamists are my prime suspects for ALL crimes of mayhem and homicidal violence until demonstrated otherwise.

Wrong? Look at Number 5 on this list.

Ever heard of this? Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act of 1989

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberti-Roos_Assault_Weapons_Control_Act_of_1989

Named Weapons banned

The term assault weapon means the following designated semiautomatic firearms as defined by Penal Code section 30510:
(a) All of the following specified rifles:

(1) All AK series including, but not limited to, the models identified as follows:

(A) Made in China AK, AKM, AKS, AK47, AK47S, 56, 56S, 84S, and 86S.
(B) Norinco 56, 56S, 84S, and 86S.
(C) Poly Technologies AKS and AK47.
(D) MAADI AK47 and ARM.

(2) IMI UZI and Galil.
(3) Beretta AR-70.
(4) CETME Sporter.

And many many others.

I thought people build their own. Plus I guess they buy replicas with different names? I am guessing that you can’t buy an AR 15 but a clone with a different name.

Some Christians may be called Samir. But I KNOW that many Muslims use that name. This could be just a psychopath, and the fact that he killed his dad and brother push speculation in that direction. Although he may or may not be Muslim, I suspect that, were he a Christian, we would already know it. Were he a Christian active in a church, this would already be the headline. My guess: madman, but a Muslim madman. Anyway, we can and should wait before rushing to judgment.

I’m wondering if he burned the house out of rage or if he intended to destroy evidence—computer, discs, journal, photos, correspondence, address book, etc.—that might compromise other local fanatics.

[We all ought to be aware that in the last few decades thousands of eastern Christians have left the Middle East and sought asylum elsewhere because of persecution.]

Many Muslims now living here are also legitimate political refugees.
