Chris Christie appoints NJ Attorney General Jeff Chiesa as interim senator

Chris Christie has appointed New Jersey’s Attorney General Jeff Chiesa, a former federal prosecutor who worked for him as governor and as U.S. Attorney, as the interim senator replacing the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

“I said on Monday I was going to select the person I thought was going to be the best person to represent New Jersey between now and Oct. 13,” Christie told reporters. “During the last few days as I’ve gotten to deliberate on this decision, it became clear to me that Attorney General Chiesa would be the best person to represent the people of New Jersey in the United States Senate.”

Christie said Chiesa does not plan to run for the seat in the special election.

“I’m perfectly comfortable with that decision,” he said. Chiesa had not been among the names circulated in the early short-lists mentioned by Christie insiders.

Christie announced the selection at a news conference in Trenton, shortly before he was set to leave for a GOP donor retreat in Utah with Mitt Romney, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Christie’s pick came three days after Lautenberg passed away at age 89.

Christie had said he wanted to move speedily to fill the seat. But given the timing of the special election he set — the general election is Oct. 16, followed by an Aug. 13 primary is Aug. 13 — the appointment will be relatively short-lived.

Optomist that I am......this might not be a bad move!!! It gives the Pubbies another Senator for over four months!!! The pubbies now have 46 senators. With an outside chance, another seat could be picked up by Gomez in MA on June 25th. That make 47 Pubbie senators.

If the pubbies hold the line, the immigration bill, in present form will die. Also....the whole political world can change during these four months. If Obama fails to push any of his agenda through by October, he is finished until at least, November of 2014. Nothing will happen through early 2014 because all will be gearing up for the Mid-Term elections coming in November, 2014.

Many Democrats want nothing to do with Obama, and they will not go down with him. Things happen!!! The everyday scandals emerging around Obama, could bring Obama down or, at least make him ineffective, Obamacare could collapse completely and be rejected outright or altered im massive fashion!!!

A few Democrats may opt to change parties, at that point, only two or three Senators need to switch or just simply vote against Obama to stop anything Obama wants to do!!!.

You know what, we need that seat in MA. RNC, etc....get your butts in gear and pour the human resources and money into that MA Senate race, giving Gomez a good chance to win!!! Wishing & Hopeful!!!

Give it to Ann Coulter to admit she’s wrong when she believes she’s wrong.

What probably escapes most people is that NJ politics is “special”. And no matter the national political scene, Christie seems to know NJ politics, and NJ attitudes to a ‘t’.

Early on in his governorship, I read the comment that if you go into a working man’s bar in NJ, the place will be filled with guys just like Christie. He speaks their language, he knows their likes and dislikes. He eats their food and drinks their beer. Importantly, they know that and like it.

I mention this to say that he probably knows *exactly* what to do about this senate seat. How to treat it with an early election, that the typical NJsian would prefer, yet to put a popular Republican in the seat as well, giving him a huge advantage going into the special election.

So, national politics aside, which in the long run *might* get another Republican pickup in the senate, Christie is keeping the politics local, and giving the NJsians what they want.

I am no more happy with Christie's handling of the Obama photo-ops than anyone else. Yet I believe that Christie has done enough good for his State--after all his primary duty--to deserve to be given the benefit of the doubt by Conservatives in general.

Let us see how this all turns out.

Chris Christie might understand New Jersey politics perfectly, but does he understand Republican politics in Iowa and New Hampshire?

If Chris Christie intends to run for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, he has a golden opportunity now to prove his loyalty to the Republican party by, first, choosing the best Republican candidate he can find to run for Frank Lautenberg’s Senate seat in October, endorsing him, and then doing everything possible to promote party unity by discouraging other Republicans from also contesting the seat.

If Chris Christie manages to do this, while the Democrats follow the usual procedure of allowing multiple egomaniacs to vie among themselves for the Senate seat, the Republicans will win and Mr. Christie will be able to take some credit in the snows of New Hampshire and the pig farms of Iowa when the time comes.

But if Chris Christie doesn’t make an effort and a Democrat wins the election to replace Frank Lautenberg, Chris Christie will not deserve Republican support in 2016. And at that point he might as well have his stomach unstapled and go back to pigging out again.

Well, for once, something to weaken the Obama tyrannical regime and their allies in the tyranny, police-state-loving Democrat-controlled Senate.

Then why not just appoint a conservative who wants to run, Lonegan? That way he can run from a position of strength as an incumbent. Christie’s a jerk.

That might be true, but the “welfare man” outnumbers the “working man” now in NJ.
