The cops don’t care about fines as they don’t pay them themselves. The law should be that any brutality case settlement should be paid out of the offending officers pocket. THAT would bring an end to this stuff. Until then the cops just laugh at us.

IIRC the state is exempt from law suits but the cops ar not. If you name the cop the state can refuse to idemnify them if they were acting in an extreme manner or outside the scope of their duties.

IMO these were acting inside the scope of their duties and the department will cover any award.

I believe punitive damages cannot be paid by the state.

The state can also discipline/fire the officers regardless of what happens in court.

The two should be on administrative leave while undergoing an internal affairs investigation. They are cearly a danger to the public.

My investigation experience ended in 98 when I retired.

Perhaps someone more recent could comment on Cal cases.
