The most likely accurate conspiracy theory on this is that Obama knew this was going to happen and it was planned as a kidnapping that would then give the kidnappers someone they could trade for the Blind Shiekh. Obama would have then come across as a man who had a diplomatic success just before the election.
Unfortunately, guys that were ordered to stand down fought. The result was the intended victim died of smoke inhilation, itself evidence that this is what happened. They usually take a more active role in killing their victims.
IOW, this was a real world version, of a sort, of the movie “Fargo”.
One of the keys to this theory is all of the noise about the Blind Sheikh at the time...they just went away after this incident.
