An 11-foot-long mako shark, weighing in at 1,323.5 pounds, is no tall tale. The shark, caught off the southern California coast, was reeled in by Jason Johnston of Mesquite, Texas, and its size might be a world record.
The angler made the giant catchusing chopped fish as baitwhile on a charter fishing trip off Huntington Beach, Calif., on Monday. It didnt come easy, reports CBS Los Angeles.
He took out a quarter-mile of line ... and five times he came out of the water over 20 feet, Johnston told the station. It was amazing.

I was at Mission Bay earlier, I rode my motorcycle down there for some air.
Hey, all you have to do is flip a great white over and rub its belly. It good into a trance-like state. Problem solved.
Ain’t got no spit.
We’re going to need a bigger boat.
My twin lives in Vista (near San Diego). He was the most avid fisherman of our family. He has his own small boat and goes out of Mission Bay and Oceanside, but he says that with all of the good fishing areas now off limits to fishing, he has decided to give one of his sons his boat.
He and his wife ride their bikes along the bay side in Mission Bay where we had our many family vacations.
My father started us in boating at a very early age and all five of us (four boys and a girl) ended up with boats. Catalina was our regular hang out, but each year (for 13 years) we were in Mission Bay for the entire month of August. A lot of water skiing and fishing (and great times around the fire ring at night).
One time, we were in a school of albacore, and my brother landed 1/2 of a 20+lb albacore (bitten in half by a shark). The shark was circling the boat and appeared to be a lemon.
My brother was so upset that, after a fairly long fight, he lost one half of his fish.
In order to not loose any more fish, we took a piece of what was left of his fish and put it on a very large triple hook that was attached to braided nylon rope.
We tied the rope to a cleat on the bow of our boat and threw the ‘bait’ out and he took it. Once he was hooked, we used the power winch to bring him fairly close to the bow.
We went back to fishing and caught our limit of albacore. When it came time to leave, we ran the winch in until the sharks head was out of the water and he shook himself free.
Crazy times.
Hooper, quit paying with yourself
There was a cannery in Mission Bay (Seaforth)where we took the fish for canning”
I live on Mission Bay. Where was the cannery located?
SeaForth sportfishing is still there (in Quivira basin). Here is the link to their site: http://www.seaforthlanding.com/index.php They had a cannery there wher you could get your fish smoked or canned.
There was a great restaurant there (now a lot smaller) that had great service and food for the fisherman before they went out on the boats. We would go there after water skiing over near Sea World and have a fantastic breakfast and then shower at the Islandia Hotel where we kept our boat. The Islandia is now the Hyatt.
In the meantime, the REAL Mako is still waiting for his cut...
