Like many others, I have real concerns about what Christie is going to do here, but I’m going to wait until he announces who will fill the seat between now and the special election in the fall. This could actually work out for the Republicans. Here’s what I mean by that: Assuming he does appoint a Republican as the interim senator, that person will most likely be the Republican nominee in the special election, which will take take on the same ballot as the NJ gubernatorial election. Regardless of what you think about Christie, he is extremely popular in New Jersey, and should easily win reelection. There’s a good chance that the Republican senate candidate will ride his coattails to a full six year term in the senate.
Um...no. This decision avoids that altogether. This Special Election is being held in October...a month before the gubernatorial election.
I agree with what you’re saying in theory, but since the special election for Senate will be separate from the general election, there will likely be little coattail effect that would benefit a Republican interim Senator. Me, I’m reserving judgment for now.
I doubt that. Not enough time for that interim appt to do anything. And Christie is popular for SURE. But N.J. is deep blue. No way Christie has coattails. Any GOPer will need to stand on his own and NO time to do that.
