I agree with what you’re saying in theory, but since the special election for Senate will be separate from the general election, there will likely be little coattail effect that would benefit a Republican interim Senator. Me, I’m reserving judgment for now.

My mistake. I thought both would take place on the same ballot.

In fact Christie knows that Cory Booker's coattails would hurt him in the gubernatorial election. Booker will bring a black turnout similar to that of Obama and that would hurt Christie. The selfless patriotic move here would be to appoint a Republican to hold the Senate seat until it expires in 2014-15. IMHO this is just as creepy and selfish as the Obama photo-ops.
