Rep. Donald Payne calls cuts to food assistance program 'absolutely immoral'

Political leaders from the national, state and local level stopped by New Jersey’s largest food bank this afternoon to voice their opposition to a bill that would slash funding for federal programs that help feed the hungry.

U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-10th Dist.), who organized the event at the Hillside-based Community FoodBank of New Jersey, said he is “very concerned” about potential cuts as a result of the 2013 Farm Bill. He was joined by state Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-Union) and Hillside Councilwoman Angela Garretson.

-----

“It’s immoral in this nation that people would have to go hungry,” he added. “It’s absolutely immoral.”

But abortion isn't immoral is it?

Once upon a time, long, long ago, feeding the hungry was thought to be the proper province of the church.

Those days are long gone now, of course.

Where is free food (or free anything) mentioned in the constitution?

For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. ~2 Thessalonians 3:10

20% of Americans are on food stamps.
1 in every 5 Americans will go “hungry” if food welfare is trimmed back to sanity?

Go play in the street, Payne.

When and why did it change?

I remember in the 60's food was called (and labeled) Government Surplus.

I never really gave it much thought except I thought maybe it was re labeled war food or something ... and all there was, was beans and corn and some kind of spam ... nothing really exciting (I knew people that fed their dogs with GS food)

I guess now it's an actual business with quota's and production runs and all that to meet the "demand"

My guess in the 70’s when Superstar and Godspell started infiltrating the minds of young folks ... and stuffy ol’ church jus’ wasn’t hip enough.

It changed because some people want to remove God and the church from our lives. They try to replace things the church was doing with government. It has been a complete failure.

A lot of people that are WORKING can hardly afford their food. Why should they pay for someone too lazy to work?

I had a renter with an EBT card. She drank beer and smoked continuously. (I had to paint the entire place and clean the ducts when she moved.) She spent all of her money on beer and cigarettes. When she moved out, in August, without telling me, she left over $100 worth of EBT top-of-the-line steaks in the unpowered fridge, but took all the beer. The new refrigerator was ruined.

Free food stops people from making choices like should I be drunk and nicotined all day or buy real food? (FYI, she’d had several publically funded throat cancer operations and was on numerous cancer treatments, but never even slowed down the smoking. So having to make that choice would have improved her life.)

What’s immoral is 20 million unemployed, 30 million or so underemployed, and a president happy about it.

The State want to remove “faith-based” programs from the equation, so it simply competed with them to drive them out of business (though rather than rely on donations, they had the tax-man raise their funds for them). Here in NJ they have nearly eradicated our religious-affiliated hospitals and education system (which had been huge); all will be forced to use the public systems. For the schools they taxed people so heavily for the public system that people can’t afford private schools (even though they spend less per student than the public schools), and for the hospitals they forced them to treat all while reimbursing them for “charity care”, then cut the reimbursements to the bone (driving them out of business or onto the auction block).

The State is the enemy of faith.

I wonder if Payne criticizes the gov’t for no longer serving hot meals to the men overseas who are fighting so that he can open his stupid pie-hole
