Colorado Dems: "Sheriffs stand with Criminals"

The Democrat majority in the 2013 session of the Colorado legislature pushed through new gun control laws requiring universal background checks for any transfer of ownership and restrictions on the capacity of ammunition magazines. They did so over the advice and united objection of the County Sheriffs of Colorado, the association representing the 62 elected Sheriffs in the state.

The Sheriffs crafted a five page memo  warning the legislators that the gun control measures they were proposing would be "unenforceable and possibly unconstitutional, while punishing law abiding citizens and doing nothing to reduce violent crime." About twenty of the Sheriffs also showed up at the State Capitol to express their opposition during committee hearings, but the Democrat leadership only allowed one of them to testify.

Advice and public testimony aside, the Democrats ignored the Sheriffs.  Subsequently, John Hickenlooper, the Democrat Governor, signed the bills into law.

Sticking to their convictions, 55 of the 62 county sheriffs filed a lawsuit in federal court on May 17 seeking to overturn the legislation on constitutional grounds.

Apparently the Democrats still can't accept the serious disagreement of these front-line law enforcement professionals.  According to The Daily Caller, the Colorado Senate Democrats tweeted, “2day CO sheriffs stood in opposition of CO’s new gun laws, but not w/law-abiding citizens, but with criminals. #coleg #Sheriffs4Criminals.”

Really!  Our Sheriffs stand with the criminals?  If there happened to be any lingering doubt, the Democrats just confirmed who is the grown-up and who is the juvenile in this debate.

The sheriffs should explicitly state that because the Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land, any governmental rules which would on their face contradict the Constitution are by definition not laws [the only way they could be laws would be if they were superior to the Constitution, but by definition nothing can be superior to the Supreme Law]. They should further state that to arrest someone on the basis of illegitimate rules that lack legal basis would itself be a crime, and that those who are pressing for such arrest are trying to encourage lawless behavior.

Actions can have consequences.

Seems like the sheriffs are in the right place. It’s time for patriots to run the rats off the ship.

Sounds like Colorado has the legislature it elected. If they want to roll back the gun laws the Democrats put in place, Coloradans can clean house the next couple of election.

Huh. Apparently I’m one of the criminals they stand with. Thank God my sheriff (Weaver in Douglas county) is one of them.
