My strongest inclination is that Monsanto has been working on the same thing and seeks to patent a “roundup read” bee.
They’re using their clout($) to influence government entities to destroy their competition.

I’d say that you are right in that guess.
They will probably end up creating some new killer bee that attacks humans, perhaps targeting conservatives. (only half kidding)
