SANFORD -- Two delivery drivers for a Papa Johns in Sanford are out of a job after a racist voicemail rant surfaced online.
Now, the CEO of the pizza chain is apologizing to the nation.
It started when one of the drivers pocket-dialed an African-American customer in Sanford, leaving a voicemail filled with racist language.
That customer posted the voicemail on YouTube last week and it has since gone viral.
"They give me five bucks there. Fine outstanding African gentleman of the community," the driver is heard saying at one point.
The community the former employee is referring to is Sanford's African American community.
The rest of the voicemail, which runs several minutes, is filled with obscenities and repeated racial slurs.
In his YouTube post, the customer said he gave the delivery driver more than a 20-percent tip.
He also showed the delivery box, which said, "Your pizza experience managed by Brian," though it's not clear if Brian is the name of either of the employees who were fired.
After hearing about the incident, Papa John's Chairman and CEO, John Schnatter, posted an apology on Facebook and Twitter:

We heard it.
The guy was a jerk.
And the tip was a generous tip.
its sorry for this and sorry for that.....still waiting for the racist Farakan to ‘pologize....or any of his rabble...
“I worked delivering pizza. 20 on the 16 dollar or so bill is a decent tip. We usually do around 20 or 25 deliveries in a night that can be around 10 hours. So, do the math. 4x20 is about 80 bucks and close to minimum wage.”
I did the same thing during my college freshman year, to pay for my tuition. The one thing I remembered harshly is that never expect a tip and they are a bonus. And the 2nd part is never deliver to the hood’. This was before my other college cash job of driving escorts to their clients which paid way better..;)
$5.00 tip for that amount of pizza is good. The delivery guy is an a**hole.
A 5 dollar tip on a 15 dollar pizza seems pretty generous to me ... if i had handed the guy 3 bucks I wouldn’t have felt bad about it.
Had a gentleman of the Amish persuasion once on the final wednesday of the month hassle me over paying a 28 dollar bill with a 50.
They are supposed to tell us beforehand. I carried quite a large float on me (more than the normal, so I was fine).
He picked me up and threatened me when I told him he got 22 dollars back instead of 32. I looked at him and asked him what he planned to do with me now that he had picked me up. He put me down, I left the food and grabbed the money.
He was blacklisted. Hey is that racist?
We have an office close to Skid Row in L.A. and I used to intern at a state-run office which pays for the electricity (until now, still operating) of “disadvantaged minorities”.
Guess which of those minorities make up 95% of the recipients? Here’s a hint, it ain;t the mexiclowns...
I rarely get pizza delivered but did a few weeks ago and mentioned to my twenty-something son I’d give a $3 tip. He made sure it was at least $5. I guess with the price of gas, the delivery tips went up, too. So my ordering delivery pizza will remain a rare event!
20%+ not good enough for delivery? WTF?
Then the should stay and serve it to me.
A garden variety snotty remark and it gets whooped up into the unpardonable sin or sumfin.
In the meantime, what if some black employee had let that slip about a tightwad white customer? YAWWWN city.
High, high time to call out this whole crazy world on its hypocrisy. BUST DOWN THE IDOLS OF RACISM FOR (LITERALLY) GOD’S SAKE!!
You was a pimp?
That was over a 32% tip.
Amish again? I thought the amish were supposed to be against electricity.
Oh - take a guess what chain the amish dude who grabbed me ordered from? ;)
Opps. Belay the 32% LOL
Maybe he’d been getting snubbed by the melanistic folks and was happy then. Where else but America can one get fired for a clumsy COMPLIMENT?
No, I wasn’t a pimp. The pimp was a madam. ;)
Papa John’s charges a delivery fee and also makes the lousiest pizza compared to just about everyone e.se in our area. Customer should add that to the racist rant complaint.
That was no compliment.
