SANFORD -- Two delivery drivers for a Papa John’s in Sanford are out of a job after a racist voicemail rant surfaced online.
Now, the CEO of the pizza chain is apologizing to the nation.
It started when one of the drivers pocket-dialed an African-American customer in Sanford, leaving a voicemail filled with racist language.
That customer posted the voicemail on YouTube last week and it has since gone viral.
"They give me five bucks there. Fine outstanding African gentleman of the community," the driver is heard saying at one point.
The community the former employee is referring to is Sanford's African American community.
The rest of the voicemail, which runs several minutes, is filled with obscenities and repeated racial slurs.
In his YouTube post, the customer said he gave the delivery driver more than a 20-percent tip.
He also showed the delivery box, which said, "Your pizza experience managed by Brian," though it's not clear if Brian is the name of either of the employees who were fired.
After hearing about the incident, Papa John's Chairman and CEO, John Schnatter, posted an apology on Facebook and Twitter:

So, the CEO felt like he had to apologize to the WORLD via the Internet? Isn’t it enough to apologize directly to the customer and fire the driver?

I need to get to the bottom of this. Is $5 a poor tip? If so then perhaps I have some delivery drivers mad at me.

My gosh. There is a racist in America. And he works at a franchise whose CEO dared publicly oppose Barack Obama.
I am sure this will be above the fold everywhere. I don’t watch television, but I will guess it will be prominently featured on the national nightly news stations.
So he accidentally called them, while he was talking to someone else? Is that it?
So how much are you supposed to tip for pizza delivery then? And for the person at a buffet that brings your drinks? And also for cleaning your hotel room? I always wonder about those.

I worked delivering pizza. 20 on the 16 dollar or so bill is a decent tip. We usually do around 20 or 25 deliveries in a night that can be around 10 hours. So, do the math. 4x20 is about 80 bucks and close to minimum wage.
Hunch: they were talking about someone besides the gentleman who tipped 21% and was “butt dialed.”
