MAF HONORS OUR TROOPS PAST AND PRESENT
WITH THOUSANDS OF PATRIOTS AT THE USS IOWA!

Troopathon Operations Director Scott Raab and Online Marketing Director Jon Salazar were on site in San Pedro, Calif. today for a huge Memorial Day event at the USS Iowa. Thousands of patriots gathered together with MAF and our Southern California radio partners KRLA AM870 The Answer. This WW2-era battleship USS Iowa was built in 1940 and saw action in the Pacific Theater in WW2 as well as Korea. She is now a museum on full display while docked in San Pedro, one of only four ships remaining of her class of fast battleship.

Bristling with guns after being reactivated and refit thanks to President Ronald Reagan's efforts to beef up the Navy, she carries 9 huge 16-inch guns, 20 5-inch guns, as well as over 30 long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, and a plethora of various anti-aircraft weapons. This Battleship weighs in at over 45,000 tons and is over 887 feet in length. Despite her age, she remains a testament to U.S. sea power.

Move America Forward was proud to join the thousands of patriots who came out to the USS Iowa today in honor of our troops who fell in the line of duty. Included in that number were 47 sailors who tragically died in an accidental turret explosion on one of the USS Iowa's guns in April of 1989. Memorial Day is a day to celebrate all of our warriors, past and present, who have died in the line of duty, defending our country.

Honor those brave few who made the ultimate sacrifice! We still have over 68,000 troops serving in Afghanistan, willing to make that same sacrifice. They're in harms way right now, on our behalf. GIVE THANKS TODAY for their service as a way of honoring those men and women who have died in the line of duty.

TODAY IS MEMORIAL DAY AND WE
STILL HAVE TROOPS IN HARM'S WAY!

DON'T FORGET ABOUT OUR TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN! As we gather with family and friends today to celebrate Memorial Day, don't forget WHY we're celebrating. Memorial Day is about honoring those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. Ever since our Nation's founding, America has always depended on brave individuals who were willing to lay down their lives to defend our freedoms.

This weekend is to honor those brave few throughout the years who made the ultimate sacrifice for our sake. We still have over 68,000 troops serving in Afghanistan, willing to make that same sacrifice. They're in harms way right now, on our behalf. Let's resolve to thank them this Memorial Day for their service as a way of honoring those men and women who have died in the line of duty.

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day... While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873... It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays)

Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.

Dennis Prager broadcast his show live today, from nearby the USS Iowa.

Great tribute to our fallen heros!

Thanks very much for this great thread, Syncro!I would have thought that it would evoke a flood of responses - but apparently even here Memorial Day is paid only lip service.

Thanks for the bumping and appreciation of this thread, Conor.

But don’t discount FR members as being lax on celebrating and recognizing Memorial Day and our esteemed veterans by just the replies to one thread.

There was a lot of appreciation shown on Free Republic.
