The bridge's design was, IIRC the term, "fault critical." One thing breaking could bring down the entire bridge. I was amazed to see our local liberal rag, The Quad City Times ran a piece correctly blaming this on Congress saving money back at the time of its construction. More redundant and thus safer designs were available, but were more expensive. In Ike's rush to complete the Interstate Highway system corners were crossed. Thousands of other fault critical bridges were built and are still in use.
