YBOR CITY - Officially recognized by the Hillsborough County Commission for the first time, this year's GaYbor Days events continue Sunday in Ybor City.
GaYBOR Days, a weekend packed with shows and events to promote gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses in Tampa, is hosted every year by the GaYBOR Coalition. The coalition is made up of almost 300 businesses throughout the Tampa Bay area, said Carrie West, the group's president.
The weekend is meant to promote the Ybor City area, showcase businesses and show that Tampa is a good destination for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.
We're doing very good, West said of the coalition, which formed in 2007.
Festivities began Friday with a film festival at Muvico Centro Ybor, and continues today and Sunday with stage shows, parties and shopping. A scavenger hunt featuring the Roosters of Ybor community art project will continue through June 10.
In its sixth year, GaYBOR Days earned a unanimous proclamation of praise last week from the Hillsborough County Commission, which drew national attention in past years for refusing to support gay-themed events.
The proclamation notes the GaYBOR Coalition serves as a strong economic engine in our community and the GaYbor district ranks as a top destination in the GLBT travel industry.
That is just a remarkable thing, West said. I can't believe that happened.
He also said the group received letters of support from some of the area's chambers of commerce and from President Obama.
This is a really promising point in Tampa, West said.
If I had a son........
He’d look like a redneck and would be straight as an arrow
Liberal Government Idiots are doing their best to turn Tampa from a fairly conservative, nice place to live to a magnet for muslim American haters, queers, and moochers.
They are lucky enough to live in a small piece of paradise but are working hard to turn it into just another liberal cess pit.

Yes, dress for success in the Twenty-First Century - wear a leather vest and... uh... maybe some shoes.
Or maybe no shoes.
But don’t forget the Vaseline.
With all that is happening in this world, this gets the attention of obama. Do you suppose he knows he wrote a letter?
anyone have a list of these companies?
I’d like to know which to avoid like the plague
I saw the headline and thought O’Reilly had finally come out of the closet.
Charlie Crist was probably there.
