(CNN) - He's running.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul announced Friday he will be on ballots in November 2016, but he told voters in his home state that they might be the only ones with a chance to vote for him.
The freshman Republican senator was returning to Kentucky from visits to a trio of states that hold sway in the presidential nominating process, visits which further stoked the speculation about his presidential interests. He indicated his intention to be on the ballot for re-election that year, but downplayed any White House ambitions.
"For now, (what) we know for sure is we're going to run for the U.S. Senate," he said, according to a report from The Independent. "The other decision can come later."
Paul posted online a link to a separate report on his appearance at the Woodford County Republican Dinner, one which did not include the quote. Both articles noted state law allows him to run simultaneously for the White House and re-election to his Senate seat.
Earlier this week he spoke at a GOP fundraising dinner in New Hampshire and before that appeared at events in Iowa and South Carolina.
He has been upfront with his interest in potentially running for the White House, but at the dinner in New Hampshire focused his attention on the party.

“The field will be more conservative than in years past, and will have more powerful debaters.
I honestly think the debate cycle for our 2016 primary will be the most interesting in recent memory.”
The presidential debates will be more interesting too...providing the GOP learned its lesson re: the Candy Crowley fiasco.
Ha! Sarah can kick 0-hugging Crispy and Amnesty-loving MarcoPhone Rubio right off deck, handily.
Cruz is the reason why I am still fervent on Obama Eligibility.
If we are able to confirm Obama was foreign-born...and he is not removed by Congress or the courts...they could not do same to Cruz...legal precedent would have been set with Obama. Cruz could become President
More reason to pursue Obama’s Birth Certificate
Not only Rand will have problems with his pro-Amnesty stand....a lot of his supporters were also his Dad’s supporters...and they are PO’d with Rand for supporting Romney before his Dad dropped out of the ‘12 race.
The GOP will have to run a conservative in the primary to keep that seat....Rand will not get the support like he did his last run
I do not support amnesty, I support legal immigration and recognize that the country has been enriched by those who seek the freedom to make a life for themselves. However, millions of illegal immigrants are crossing our border without our knowledge and causing a clear threat to our national security. I want to work in the Senate to secure our border immediately. In addition, I support the creation of a border fence and increased border patrol capabilities.
Immigrants should meet the current requirements, which should be enforced and updated. I realize that subsidizing something creates more of it, and do not think the taxpayer should be forced to pay for welfare, medical care and other expenses for illegal immigrants. Once the subsidies for illegal immigration are removed, the problem will likely become far less common.
I support local solutions to illegal immigration as protected by the 10th amendment. I support making English the official language of all documents and contracts.
Millions crossing our border without our knowledge constitutes a clear threat to our nation's security. Instead of closing military bases at home and renting space in Europe, I am open to the construction of bases to protect our border.
Cruz stated on Hannity’s show the he “would let others decide” on the subject of his eligibility. At least he is honest about the controversy unlike Rubio.
Just a couple of weeks ago you were posting, over and over again, that Ted Cruz is definitely not eligible. Do you think there's a chance he might be eligible after all?
Thanks for noticing! I think he is not. That said, I don’t think our side will care so much though and will be willing to overlook his ineligibility using Obama as example. I don’t think this is the right way but whatever. I don’t believe that winning anything is so important that the rules should be sloughed off, even if the other side has already done it. Just my two cents.
Anyway, I predict that we will only get Rand or Cruz, not both, they are Texas Wackobird friends after all :)
I think if Cruz is it, Rand will support him right from the start and vice versa. With the current batch of GOP hopefuls we have right now, only Rand or Cruz cuts the mustard.
Which is why I won't go for Rand "Immigration Reform" Paul.
Exactly, and that’s the strategy. We circle up, aim inward, and start firing while a liberal like Christi or Bush saunters in.
“I shall propose two R governors as possible nominees:
Bobby Jindal
Mike Pence”
I won’t vote for ANY senators or congressmen. I’d add Gov. Mary Fallin (OK) to your list of potentials.
I have a hard time believing that you were ever a Rand fan in the first place, which is OK. As far as immigration reform goes, Rand has got to be smart and play to suppress Hispanic turnout in the general. If you read my post a few posts earlier on here, you will see that Rand is not some open borders, amnesty guy. Yes, he doesn’t think that rounding up and deporting all illegals is viable... neither do I, many conservatives and many fellow FReepers. Rand Paul does not believe that illegals are entitled to one cent of federal or state funds, I think we all agree on that here.
Why I like Rand?
Rand Paul is 100% strong against abortion. National Journal ranks him as near the top of the GOP as far as social policy goes, which is awesome for a politician who is liberty leaning. Here’s something, you dont like Rand right? Go look at his record as Senator and see if there is one thing that you disagree with? You may be surprised how much you like him afterall.
Even if they are the nominee? Cruz is in the senate, you wouldn’t vote for him? I mean... we have an election to win i 2016, unless you’re cool with Hilldabeast.. which I am not.
When is Cruz going to announce? Now’s the time.
Of your list, I could support Kasich, Walker, Pence, Haley, Martinez and add Fallin (Ok). No more politicians from congress.
Jeb Bush, Chris Christi
Barring the unforseen, conservatives should quickly coalesce around Cruz. Then it's his race to lose.
For the first time, since Reagan, conservatives will be united against a divided GOPe. They are divided between Jeb and Krispy.
What are your thoughts on Rand? Rand can build a broader coalition than Cruz you know, and as far as senatorial record goes, they are pretty much on par with eachother.
My preferences:
1) Ted Cruz
2) Sarah Palin
3) Rand Paul
No RINO Rubio, no RINO Ryan, no fatass Christie, no RINO Jeb!
Well, Rand has been doing pretty good to date. I’m not at all inclined to badmouth him. But I do absolutely hate his amnesty/illegals plan. And I’m particularly wary of him leaning too much in a libertarian direction on issues like gay marriage, dope, and the aforementioned border issues. A primary would bring a lot of that into focus. They are indeed killer issues with me.
