This was one of Stephen Foster’s greatest successes, and Thomas Hampson does it proud.

”Beautiful Dreamer”

This is a heartbreaker about a dead Union soldier. Talk about Scots-Irish!

”Faded Coat of Blue”

This song started in the South and then came North, becoming a hit everywhere. I’ve told the story at the Canteen about the first time I met John Hartford when I was in college radio, and my later lunch with him and a writer from a Philadelphia newspaper who knew nothing about him. These pictures come from a time when John still had his hair.

”Lorena”

My week as camp counselor is June 17 - 21 Ma, unless I get the job with the NRA and then all bets are off, but I have a work crew at camp tomorrow if the rain holds off. Titan came to visit last weekend, which was why I was MIA at the Canteen, and we did a 6 hour work party at camp last Saturday and band rehearsal Saturday Night. Titan brought me a house cat named Slinky to keep me company and we're getting along like old friends.

I've got strawberries, potatos and lots of varieties of hot peppers going strong and a few rows of corn so far. I've got lots of beans yet to plant when the weather and time allows, but just keeping up with the mowing is wearing me out.

I saw Mikie again last Thursday and he called me "daddy"! That was huge for me as I spent years wondering if I'd ever hear him say it again.

The Emancipationists and Abolitionists were two different movements aimed at ending slavery, although each movement had its own ideas about how to do the job. While the Emancipationists were always in the political mainstream – slave owner and senator Henry Clay of Kentucky was president of the American Emancipation and Colonization Society – the Abolitionists were considered the lunatic fringe of the movement. Then came Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Bleeding Kansas and Dred Scott in the 1850's, which moved the political playing field in a way that put the Abolitionists in the mainstream. This was the Abolitionist anthem. While most people considered John Brown a domestic terrorist, Abolitionists considered him a hero and martyr.

”John Brown’s Body”

Later, Julia Ward Howe wrote her own lyrics to this melody, which is how it is remembered today. She made much more effective use of the tune than the folk version. This is the US Army Chorus performance done at the dedication of Dubya’s Presidential Library.

”The Battle Hymn of the Republic”

That‘s it for tonight. I’ll be back tomorrow night with the second part of the Music of the Civil War.

Good evening, Kathy!

*HUGS*

No gardening today - I was diverted by emergent tasks.

It's gotten cold here - we didn't make it much over 50 today - declining into the 40's now. I believe this is one of those rare days when the temps in Alaska are higher than here in Md. They will have frost overnight out in the hills of Western Md.

The flowers are happy - roses are in bloom - trying to get out and take photos but always seem to get diverted.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
