More Gays Are Raising Kids in Mississippi Than in California
SF Weekly ^ | Thu., May 23 2013 | Erin Sherbert

If you were shocked to learn that Utah is gayer than us,then you will probably feel a little confused, anxious, let down, etc. to learn that the state of Mississippi has more same-sex couple raising kids than any other state in the nation. In other words, they are not fleeing to the states that allow same-sex marriage. Now might be a good time to remind readers that Mississippi was ranked one of the top 10 worst states to raise a kid period.

Now for your burning question: WTF?

A new study by the Williams Institute, a think tank at UCLA, released this very insightful and somewhat curious infographic that shows states that have a constitutional amendment on same-sex marriage are the very locations where gays are opting to raise their kids.

Researchers found that roughly 26 percent of same-sex couples in Mississippi are raising kids, compared to just 15 percent in California, both states that have a constitutional amendment on gay marriage.

And here's more proof that Utah is attracting more gays than San Francisco: Salt Lake City had the most same-sex couples raising kids than any other city in the nation. By the way, Utah also has a constitutional amendment on gay marriage.

But head over to states where gay marriage is legal and you will find fewer couples raising kids. In Maine, only 13 percent of same-sex couples are rearing children and about 16 percent in New York.

We called Equality California to see if folks over there could make sense of this. We'll update this post when we get some insight from them.

Until then, check out the full map showing where gays are having kids:

Where do they possibly get statistics on this?

How does one define, and count, a “gay couple” for statistical purposes? Who proves a “couple” is really a “couple” - particularly in states like Utah where so-called gay marriage is not allowed (and one could not use marriage records)?

I knew a few gay men (and two with children from hetero-marriages) and they change their partners faster than than they change their clothes. Lesbians seem more stable, but regardless, such statistics seem open to a lot of falsification.

I don't know the numbers, but lots of kids of lesbian "couples" were actually procreated by one of them the normal way, with a male, in a previous relationship, either in or out of wedlock.

The LGBT ideology, however, says that while people going from a normal marriage to a gay liaison is perfectly understandable, and shows wonderful psychosexual maturity and, of course, courage, going in the other direction is impossible! Impossible!

There is strong anecdotal evidence, that many lesbian mothers had their children the old fashioned way, before they realized they were lesbian. Some even were married to men before they became enlightened about their “sexual orientation.”

The liberal explanation for such cases, is that society compelled them to conform to “heteronormative” standards, and that’s why some lesbians were apparently heterosexual before they became enlightened.

Based on the couple of gays I know this is probably lesbians who ‘discovered’ their lesbianism post childbearing and kept the kids.

...so if there are fifty same-sex couples in Mississippi, and thirteen of them are raising children; then 26% of same-sex couples in Mississippi are raising children???

ROTFLMAO! Whatever.

The graphs don’t depict numbers, but they depict percentages.

If there are only 40 homosexual couples in Mississippi, then 10 of them have children.

There might be 10,000 homosexual couples in California, with 20%, 2000 having children.

Really can’t imply much from the stats on exact numbers.

It doesn’t appear to me that the Census Bureau actually tracks this sort of information.

My guess as to what’s going on: Mississippi has a larger percentage of single-parent families, and this outfit “estimated” how many were gay.

2011 ACS:
CA
MHH: 748432 56.5% with children under 18
FHH: 1710901 64% with children under 18
NHH: 3950225 0.8% with children under 18
0.7% overall with same sex unmarried partner.

MHH: 50001 54.6% with children under 18
FHH: 203448 68% with children under 18
NHH: 340033 0.9% with children under 18
0.3% overall with same sex unmarried partner

But no, they do not break out the 0.7%/0.3% across categories so there is no way to know, by census data alone, how many gays have children.

MHH = male head of household, FHH = female head of household, NHH = nonfamily household.

Whether you say this in jest or not, I suspect there’s an element of truth to this.

I have a cousin who lives outside of Hattiesburg with his partner, and they both say that they hate being associated with other homosexuals. They hate the parades, the flaunting, the sleaze, the politics.. they see this filth on TV, the effeminate, attention-craving antics - and actually call it all “faggy” and embarrassing.

(Kinda shocked me the first time I heard them use that word.)

After being together for a few years, they bought a place in the country and have been out there now for 15 years, one an engineer (formerly air force) and one a construction manager. While I usually hate what the homos are doing to our society (it’s friggin’ everywhere. Sickening), I can actually respect them on some level for conducting their lives in this manner. If they can’t go straight, at least they’re willing to be quiet about it.

Well put!

Homosexuals do not “have” children. They buy them but they do not procreate.

You don't need to be straight to have a kid. You only need ovaries. Lesbians are perfectly capable of bearing children.

So you’re saying a lesbian couple can have children with no outside help?

The answer is obvious to all but SF pinheads

MS attracts more traditional folks

Even as homosexuals...

Not the Castro street variety so much

They even have homosexual oriented deer and duck camps
