(CBS) SEBASTIAN, Fla. - A Florida state attorney says the charges against Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old high school student who engaged in a same-sex relationship with a 14-year-old classmate, will not be dropped, despite petitions from the public, CBS affiliate WTSP reports.
Hunt has been expelled from Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Fla. and is charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a child 12 to 16 years of age as a result of the relationship.
The case began in February when Hunt was arrested and charged after the younger girl's parents notified authorities, reportedly when Hunt turned 18. Since then, the story has garnered national attention for what some say is a gay rights issue.

Nice selective part of my post. Right after asking what happened I said I know it’s a crime either way. Spare me your lectures.
This was a voluntary consensual relationship. That is a fact. By statute, it is rape. That is also a fact.
She’s got crazy people eyes.
Parents should tan their hides. If the kid is old enough for sex, they can move out and support themselves!
So they were dating legally when she was 17, but once she had a birthday, it's suddenly illegal. That's a rough one to sell.
The same kids are 17 and 14, ok...
then they're 18 and 15, and it's illegal...
then they're 19 and 16, and it's ok again. Apparently they're supposed to take a one-year break.
(It would be ok according to the FL statute if the older one was 23 and the younger was 16, actually.)
Then why ask the question, if you knew it was a crime?
I see, you were wanting specifics.
I guess that’ll be argued in court. The responsibility lies with the adult.
In this case, they were 18 and 14, not any of the ages you mentioned.
As I understand it, the 18yr girl was caught in the school bathroom having sex with the 14yr old girl. The school reported this to the family of the 14 yr old and they pressed charges. The parents of the 18 year old are saying it was going on before their daughter turned 18 and this is only happening because it was gay sex. This is what I understand of the story.
Lock the animal in a cage
I read elsewhere this “turned 18” is bs. The incident happened one night when the 14 year old was a runaway.
this stuff about who a child wants to love is pedophile playbook 101.
if either or both of them are under 18, the parents need to put a stop to it
bump
No.
Hunt was 18 years old when she molested the 14 year old victim in 2012.
Hunts parents are spreading disinformation, along with some newspapers.
Murder at 17 = juvenile sentence.
Murder at 18 = you are going to the clink with the big boys.
It’s called being an adult, and it isn’t hard to understand at all.
17 and sometimes younger can be charged as adults for heinous crimes.
It is not a rough sell in any way.
I will put it in one sentence.
When you reach the age of majority you gain both rights and responsibilities you did not have as a minor.
It is very simple.
The only way to pretend one does not understand it is to have so much distaste for the very concept of responsibility that one blocks it out in an irrational display of mental denial.
Too damned bad.
Growing up would have been a better choice, but there are always criminals who pursue whatever their deviancy is for a whole host of reasons.
Action, meet consequence.
Homosexuals seem to be real concerned when a different standard for age-of-consent is applied to homosexual sex, but in this case it seems they don’t want the laws to apply equally.
