'The Police Officer who shot the 2 suspects in the Woolwich terrorist attack is one of the few female members of the Met's elite firearms squad, SCO19. [1]
It was reported that around 14 minutes after the initial 999 call regarding the horrific murder of an off-duty soldier in the street by Artillery Place, near Woolwich Barracks, London, armed police arrived and confronted the 2 suspects who had seemingly made no effort to flee. Both suspects were brandishing weapons, including knives, a cleaver and a revolver. Both suspects were subsequently shot by one of the armed officers, believed to be a woman.
Specialist Firearms Command, designated as SCO19 (formerly CO19) is a branch of the Metropolitan Police Service. SCO19 fields Armed Response Vehicles (ARVs) which provide the first armed response to an incident such as the one in Woolwich yesterday. An ARV usually carries 3 SCO19 officers who are typically armed with G36 5.56mm carbines, MP5 9mm smgs and Glock 17 9mm pistols.
SCO19 also deploys Specialist Firearms Officers (SFOs) who carry out pre-planned operations and a Rifle Section of marksmen who have a counter-sniper capability.'

No, needed them alive for interrogation. Need to see who is behind this and punish them.
I am sure you are right about low crime in certain areas. The same is true here in the U.S.
My Mother’s family originally came from the Island of Colonsay back in the early 1700s. I regularly read their Island newsletter “The Corncrake”. Maybe a year or two back the island experienced it’s first major crime ever.
As it turned out, it was a burglar who stole 105 pounds from a vacation cottage. They caught the criminal and he was not from the island but was there doing some construction work.
When we lived in Bartlesville, OK, I used to take visitors up to Coffeyville to see that perfectly delightful, very hokey exhibit. It was great fun—but the image of that little boy looking through the hole in the fence at the dead outlaws laying in a row on the ground has sort of haunted me ever since.
I cannot tell what’s going on.

“UK Violent Crime Rate Eight Times Higher Than The US
Posted on March 29, 2013 by stevengoddard
According to the FBI, there were 1.2 million violent crimes committed in the US during 2011.
FBI Violent Crime
According to the UK government, there were 1.94 million violent crimes in the UK during 2011.
www.ons.gov.uk/ons/dcp171778_296191.pdf
There are almost exactly five times as many people in the US as in the UK 314 million vs. 63 million.
The violent crime rate in the UK is 3,100 per 100,000, and in the US it is 380 per 100,000 population.
For some reason, Piers Morgan doesnt talk about this.
“
“I am just angry and shocked at some of the vitriol and sneering directed at the UK on here over the last 24 hrs by some posters.”
Please, stop with the propaganda. You are always on FR bashing America and lying your ass off about stats.
So, having the means to defend yourself from those who seek to harm you, you define as "paranoid and sad." I'll bet you that that soldier murdered on your streets would have wanted to have had a firearm at his disposal at that moment. But fighting back, especially with a tool that "means business," well, I guess that wouldn't be polite. Not the British way, I guess, seeing as that the first London police on the scene had to just stand and watch until LEOs with weapons showed up.
P.S. I notice that you don't place an apostrophe in contracted words. Twice you wrote "dont" and and didn't do so. Is that the British way or you just don't know any better?
Somehow I doubt seriously they “shot to wound.” No one does that. That is pure Hollywood. Any real shooter will shoot to stop the immediate threat, and if that results in the bad guy pushing daisies, so be it. “Shooting to wound” is Hollywood. Ask any combat veteran that when they fired upon an enemy the intent was to eliminate the threat or just wing the guy. And if the object was to capture an enemy for interrogation they wouldn’t shoot him and risk killing or seriously incapacitating him. There are other ways of taking prisoners.
The size of your inductive leap from the particular (a single murderer) to the general is quite breathtaking.
When dealing with matters of life and death, not leaping from the particular to the general gets one dead very quickly. Try it sometime!
But then, you may nopt get it. Jumping from the general to the particular and when one does it is not a matter of consensus or institutional decisions to which you are accustomed. It is a matter of choice of the individual whose life could be in danger, not yours, not governments, and certainly not the police.Thats the difference beteen the USA and Great Britain. In the USA an individual right ( 2nd amendment etc.)to decide on ones self defence and how to exercise it, not the decision of some other entity. That is why you fail to understand.
In any event, there is plenty of violence in the Scotish Highlands for which any reasonable person should be prepared, including murder.

As has been repeatedly pointed out by British posters here, and contrary to a persistent myth among US commentators, the British citizen has every right to defend himself, including if necessary the use of lethal force, and that right derives from neither government nor the police. It derives from centuries-old Common Law on which both the US and British legal systems are based. You are of course right to say that it’s the individual’s responsibility to be prepared for whatever risks he might be exposed to.
That, however, is a completely different matter from your repeated and bizarre claim that the Scottish Highlands are a particularly violent or dangerous location. It doesn’t alter the fact that the risk of any individual being exposed to violence when visiting the Highlands is vanishingly small. I’m not sure what point you are trying to make by repeating single examples of crimes that have taken place there. Of course there have been violent crimes. Mankind is imperfect, individuals are wicked, evil acts are perpetrated. Is there any country, however civilized, where that is not so? None of what you have said even begins to demonstrate that, against that universal background, this area is relatively dangerous.
The average murder rate in the UK as a whole is 1.2 per 100,000 people. In the U.S. it’s 4.8, four times as high. What conclusion do you draw from that? If I had more leisure than I can lay claim to, I could probably mine from the published statistics the figures for the Highland Region. I would be very surprised if they are not a good deal better than the UK average, as this is true of most rural areas of the country.
Code, I have explained this.
The UK looks more violent because of classification. It skews the figures and makes the UK look more violent than it actually is. If you lived in the UK, you’d see it isnt a particularly violent country. And as I pointed out, the majority of UK violent crime is against property. Burglary is the biggest violent crime in the UK.
The fact remains that we have 1/16 of your gun murder rate and 1/4 of your murder rate.
BTW, I am sorry you have to deal with Morgan. He is a loathsome human being. Drive him out of the US by boycotting his show. Start a campaign.
I am not on FR bashing America. If I didnt like America and Americans, believe me, I wouldnt waste my life being here. I’d just ignore you all.
The very reason I joined FR and remain here is to chat with Americans and to correct daily any rubbish written about my country. To stand up for the UK/Scotland when Americans here unfairly comment or criticise it. To correct incorrect ‘facts’ about the UK. The ‘worst’ I will ever do is criticise America or an American, but I try to do it fairly, just as I have NO problem with fair criticism of the UK.
Everyone here knows and has seen that if I or people think occasionally overstep the mark during a thread, and I have said something incorrect/unfair about the US, I will immediately apologise. As the one thing I dont want to be known as here is anti-american.
I love America. I like Americans. I have travelled and even lived in your beautiful country and I wish to return many times before I pop my clogs.
Bashing America?. Its one of the few countries outside the UK I would actually fight and die for if you needed our help.
The media lies about anything non white non christian or non male to kick up the real truth a few notches for protected species effect
Like the rescuer in Cleveland....not!
1—I thought it sad that you restrict yourself to countries where you cant pack heat. One country in your case. Even as big, varied and gorgeous as it is. I think its a bit sad that your first thought for a holiday is your gun.
I could understand if the rest of the world was like Syria or Beirut on a bad day, but THREE MILLION americans visit the UK every year and another 150,000+ actually live here. And more millions of Americans visit Ireland and the rest of Europe, Australia, New Zealand. And they arent the victims of murder or serious crime. They have a great time, are safe and go home just as safe and happy as they did on arrival.
They dont need to carry a gun. Because these countries are safe for tourists, there isnt the need to carry a weapon.
And yes, what happened at Woolwich was horrible, but the fact is the UK remains one of the safest countries for you, Americans or anyone to visit and even live.
Millions of Brits and Irish (and other nationalities) visit your nation and live there, yet we are all and have been for decades, aware that America can be a violent, sometimes very violent, nation. But we are not put off by that, as the wish to see a great nation and its beauty override any fears we may have.
So yes, I think it is ‘sad and paranoid’ that you actually think you cant and that you wont (unlike 3 million of your fellow Americans) visit famous places like London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Scottish Highlands, Wales, Stratford Upon Avon, the White Cliffs of Dover or Stonehenge without carrying a gun.
I do not sneer at you, I actually feel a bit sad, as I would welcome you, as I would all Americans, to visit our ancient and beautiful land. And I know you would probably love it here.
I sincerely and genuinely hope you one day change your mind.
2—No, it is simply that I tend to type at speed. My lack of correct grammar is simply speed-induced sloppiness.
Your insistence that the Scottish Highlands is a murder zone is a bit odd, I have to say.

Historically and pre historically its a charnal ground. But quite lovely.
A place only for the brave.
I often wonder why the Saudis and Qataris now own most of it.
Yawn.
