Ray Manzarek (The Doors keyboardist) dies
Sky News ^ | 20th May 2013 | Sky News

Posted on 05/20/2013 3:23:21 PM PDT by the scotsman

'Ray Manzarek, a founding member of 1960s rock group The Doors has died at the age of 74, the group's manager Tom Vitorino has said.

Keyboardist Manzarek died in Rosenheim, Germany, following a battle with bile duct cancer, the band said in a statement.

Singer Jim Morrison and Manzarek formed The Doors in 1965 after a chance meeting at Los Angeles' Venice Beach, and Manzarek's keyboard work would go on to be a touchstone of hits like "Break On Through to the Other Side" and "Light My Fire."

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger said in a statement.

"I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."'

Cancel my subscription to the Resurrection
Send my credentials to the House of Detention
I got some friends inside

The face in the mirror won’t stop
The girl in the window won’t drop
A feast of friends
“Alive!” she cried
Waitin’ for me
Outside!

Before I sink
Into the big sleep
I want to hear
I want to hear
The scream of the butterfly

...

When the music’s over
Turn out the lights

RIP as a former fan of the band, to dark for me now. But the organ / base lines of Love me Two Times are running through my head as I type.

I always thought “The End” was about a coup d’etat in South Vietnam in 1963. There are references to the State Department (weird scenes inside the gold mine), the Soviet bloc (the snake), Nikita Khrushchev (He’s old, and his skin is cold), President Ngo Dinh Diem (Father), Diem’s sister Tran Le Xuan (Sister), General Duong Van Minh (the killer), etc. However, I may be the only one in the world who has come up with this interpretation.

Aw man. I’ve been a Doors fan since hearing Light My Fire on my first FM radio in 1977.

Bet this features prominently on Coast-to-Coast AM tonight. I think he and George Noori were pretty good friends...at least that’s the impression I got the few times I heard him on the show.

When I was about 10 years old, around 1965, I was camping at Grand Haven, Mich. with my friends and one girl's parents. My friend's half brother was a record producer and was in from LA with his some of his other producer buddies and we were hanging around these cooler older guys (trying not to be annoying) when my friend's brother Jack said to the other guys "Hey, there's this funky little band with this crazy keyboard player and lead singer who are just outasight. You gotta hear em. They call themselves The Doors".

True story.

C’mon, c’mon, c’mon, c’mon now touch me babe,
Can’t you see that I am not afraid......

That one always gets me in a primal place. Loved their music back in the day. RIP, Mr Manzarek. You are legend.

Nice. A school friend’s Aunt took pictures of Jim Morrison at a party. He brought them in to show to us. I loved the Doors in high school.

I know some bass players who are probably taking an inappropriate amount of glee in this.

LOL! I wonder how many people know...

A lot here didn't like the Doors. I'm not one of them.

Interesting. Who was “mother”?

Good question. Probably another reference to Tran Le Xuan, aka Madame Nhu, the de-facto "First Lady" of South Vietnam, although she was safely out of the country on a tour to try to rally support for the Diem government. "Brother" would have been Ngo Dinh Nhu, her husband and President Diem's brother, who was also killed in the coup.

Some other references--"summer rain" (the wet monsoon that brings rain to Vietnam during the summer), "some stranger's hand" (foreign economic and military aid), "insane children" (South Vietnam's coup-happy military elite), "Roman wilderness of pain" (government-by-coup, similar to ancient Rome), "the King's Highway" (Route 1, leading toward the old royal capital of Hue), "The West" (SEATO and NATO), "seven miles" (the seven members of the Warsaw Pact).

He brought his brother onstage when I saw Ray with Robby. That’s as close to a Rick and the Ravens’ reunion as I’m ever going to see.
