I will not bore you with his history as a congressman. You, I am sure, have received more information about his tenure than I have.
Therefore I will reduce my letter to this statement. Please let mercy temper justice.
Butler directed his comments to the wrong judge, however. His letter is addressed to Judge Robert Wilkins, who is no longer assigned to the case. Judge Amy Berman Jackson received the case through a random reassignment April 16.
Jackson is to be sentenced July 1.

The tragedy here is that such a promising talent has been blemished by such an occurrence, Butler writes.
Otherwise known as JJJ's lifetime...

I was hoping I would NEVER read anything of this nature. I SO LOVE JERRY BUTLER! He is so elegant, so - I don’t even have words to describe him. He is, in fact, what every black person should strive to be. (And he doesn’t understand this?) I knew he had been involved in Cook County politics for a long time. But I just can’t deal with this, I feal tears coming up inside me. Jerry, Jerry, Jerry. Surely you know the difference. My heart is broken.

Great musical career. But...he's been part of the Chicago Democrat Machine for many many years.
Also, this may just be some payback. He is very old friends with Chuck Jackson - even co-wrote a hit song with him back in the day. Chuck Jackson the younger brother of the Right Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jr. So he's got some old bones to keep.
Interesting anecdote, he wrote "For Your Precious Love", the one the Righteous Brothers made famous, when he was 16 yrs old.
But, like I said, check his bio, he has been a big part of Chicago Demo politics for many many years.

The sad fact is race trumps everything for far too many people.

Before Tony Orlando & Dawn ruined it—my favorite Butler song was “He Don’t Love You”. Followed by “Moon River”.

I’m with you. This is so hard to digest. I have loved Jerry for so many years. And from what I knew of his politics back then, I thought he was one of us. Oh, well. Even someone like Jerry who has been successful at everything he has ever done, still hss to play the game. Oh, Jerry, I loved you so.

I would check up on that Jackson thing if I were you.

Butler directed his comments to the wrong judge, however. His letter is addressed to Judge Robert WilkinsHow weird is it that a music artist who was big in the 1960s addressed a letter to a judge who has the same name as a famous bluesman who recorded in the 1920s and '30s, and finished up as a legendary blues master at the Newport Folk Festival in the early 1960s?
Check out 'Prodigal Son' by the Reverend Robert Wilkins. The Rolling Stones covered this song on Beggar's Banquet. If you want to treat yourself, give this song a listen:

I don’t know where you got this idea of Chuck Jackson being Jesse Jackson’s brother. I have never read anything to support that. Chuck was born in SC, and raised in Pittsburgh. None of his bios ever mention Jesse, and come on, if he were related, they would. Chuck is one of the most under-rated, truly great singers of his time.

Interesting catch, there!!!

Look, that connection was mentioned in one of the bio's I read in doing follow-up on the original post I made. I can not find where it came from now.
If it is erroneous, and it looks like it is, OK. I posted information from some source that was wrong - my bad. Sorry it happened. But, it will probably happen again. That's is the nature of the game.
Its good to have folks like you who can find and produce corrections for wrong info that gets posted.
That's the beauty of web sites like this - intelligent folks who can hound-dog out the facts and correct the info when it's wrong. If it's me that's wrong, which can happen on occasion, I'm doubly grateful for the correct information.
Thanks for keeping the facts first.
As an aside - I am very much into soul music and artists/groups from the late 50s, 60s and early 70s. That is one of my personal likes.
