Slim majorities of Americans are very or somewhat closely following the situations involving the Internal Revenue Service (54%) and the congressional hearings on the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and its aftermath (53%) -- comparatively low based on historical measures of other news stories over the last two decades.
These results are based on a May 14-15 Gallup poll. Despite extensive news coverage of these stories in recent days, the level of attention being paid to each is below the average 60% of Americans who have closely followed more than 200 news stories Gallup has measured over the past several decades. Additionally, Americans appear to be paying almost exactly the same levels of attention to both stories, despite the relative newness of the IRS story during the time in which this survey was in the field.
Republicans More Tuned In
Republicans are much more likely to say they are following these news stories closely than are independents or in particular Democrats. There is a 21-percentage-point gap between Republicans and Democrats in terms of following the Benghazi story closely, and a 27-point gap on the IRS story.

Gallup: Americans are stupider than we ever imagined.
There’s that 46% number again...
The question is not how much attention the sheeple are giving to IRS, Benghazi, imo, but how much attention the corrupt, Obama-protecting media is giving to IRS, Benghazi.
Not surprising. I mean, they did vote for obama — twice.
Out of work, crap economy, defeated, socialized... numb.
LLS
A caller in to Rush, today, said she voted for 0 in '08 (she's a single black mom with a Masters Degree) - not in '12. Asked when she realized "change" wasn't what it was supposed to be, she said at the beginning of this year and ESPECIALLY since the IRS/Benghazi/AP abuses have come to the surface.
Like someone said, here, earlier. These are GOV'T ABUSES and need to be called that - not scandals or *situations*.
Abuse affects everyone, regardless of political leanings.
American proved their stupidity in 2008, reaffirmed it in 2012. I truly believe Ronald Reagan would have had trouble beating 0bama last year with the dumbing down of the American public, and the 24/7 propaganda effort by the socialist run media/entertainment complex.
Look at the difference between Repubs and dems in the numbers paying attention to these important issues. Wow...
Can’t the dems take time out from ogling porn and devote a few minutes to learning something constructive?
OK. 46% not following closely or at all. Would they be the 47% of “takers” mentioned by Mr. Romney? Hey, it’s only off by 1%, which is statistically insignificant, right?
” Nice to know comrade gallup is still keeping Goebbels going.”
Always.
Gallup to the rescue....
Not very surprising. Bear in mind a large amount of the people not following, don’t follow ANYTHING. They don’t vote. They read celebrity magazines
No, they are wrong but they will spend today giving democrats talking points for the weekend shows.
see, America doesn’t care, see you are over stating a simple mistake.
This cycle has gone on for a long, long time.
I don’t buy it.
Everyone I talk to is watching and furious. What hole are they surveying?
Let’s see if Americans become more interested in the IRS scandals when they have to give more of their health info to that same organization
But they all know who won American Idol last night.
