The D.C. Council is considering requiring people to purchase liability insurance before they can get a license to own a gun.
The bill would mandate that prospective gun owners maintain at least a $250,000 policy. The policy would cover damages from negligent acts or intentional acts that arent undertaken in self-defense.
A handful of states are considering similar measures, but none has passed such a law....

Bodyguard and security companies already carry millions of dollars of liability insurance.
A federal law should be passed that whatever ID, background, insurance, whatever is required of gun owners by a state, the same should be required to get a voters registration card.
Both are Constitutional Rights.
I’m really interested in seeing the no doubt detailed explanation of how they plan to enforce this with thugs, gang members, drug dealers, etc.
I expect the gun to person ratio is much higher in that part of the population than any other.
Any policy that does not address this is just a joke.
Some won't pay the hospital. My husband had to have a serious operation and the day before was put in a room with another patient. The other patient was dirty. A nurse came in with a form for the man to sign so some money would go to the hospital - it was likely a Medicaid form. The man said he wasn't signing anything and they had to treat him.
I followed the nurse out and ask her to move my husband to another room as the man was filthy and they would use the same bathroom. They moved my husband out of that room right away.
What was the hospital going to do about this man? They can't turn away anyone can they? He wasn't signing anything so did the hospital have to eat the expense?
I’ll be sure to purchase some.
Right after dim-bulb-crats are required to purchase intelligence insurance.
What insurance company is going to sign a policy for INTENTIONAL ACTS NOT UNDERTAKEN IN DEFENSE?
(Aka MURDER)
Negligent acts, yes, but those are covered under regular insurance already.
Stamp Act
Auto’s are not a right and even the idiots at the supreme court would not allow a special tax on guns like they did with O-care.
That’s the whole point. No company will issue such policies, so they get their gun ban on noncriminals.
I think this is covered under your home owners liability insurance. NRA covers some of it if you are a member. Probably wouldn’t cost much unless the government gets involved in it.
First, they have to know you have a gun. States that make you register before or when you buy a gun, would know you had one or more.
In Texas, no one knows what you have. The form you fill out when you buy a gun, doesn't list what the gun is or how many you bought and that form isn't reported to the state. And firearms from long ago before the form was required, wouldn't be known either.
I can't see Texas doing this ‘cause our state government hates anything that impinges our right to weapons.
You are very optimistic. The SCOTUS including Scalia have already ruled that the 2nd Amendment is not a completely nonrestrictive right.
Home rule should be rescinded for DC. They are doing a terrible job and consistently violating the people’s rights. Or, alternatively, the Congress should pass a law which abrogates the right of the DC City Council to legislate in the area of guns. As many states have done to reign in their big city libtard politicians and citizens.
“Im really interested in seeing the no doubt detailed explanation of how they plan to enforce this with thugs, gang members, drug dealers, etc.”
There’s a soft spot in obama’s heart for thugs, so just a guess, but it’ll more than likely fall under a “no fault” insurance clause of some sort.
That way, all forms of thuggery will be covered by law-abiding citizens.
they did.
The “DC Council” is a creature of Congress, which can alter or abolish it at will, as well as pre-empt any “legislation” which they happen to pass.
I have been advocating for years for Congress to pass CCW reciprocity for DC only (Congress has no right to do this for States).
We had to eat the expense.
ya, good question. Are the youth gangs who terrorize the streets of DC going to buy their insurance policies?
