It is a weird gulf fed thing, mixing in the upper atmosphere with cold air.

I suppose that explains it, but you'd think this stuff would calm down considerably once the temps fall off a bit.

As Wayoverthehill says, the current temps haven't moved that much off today's high. That's probably it right there.
