I’ve heard that argument from some people who also added “The War was to save the Union, not free slaves.”
1) if you are drafted and died following the directives of your government, you are as dead as if you volunteered....e.g., WW II;
2)the people who bought their way out of the draft, not necessarily rich, did not die or even serve.
I did not say they were happy to die, or even liked Blacks, but DIE they did in pursuit of freeing them and even voted for those men who directed them to fight, die and free the slaves.

From the 1860 census excluding border states like Maryland, Kentucky, etc. Slaves in those states had to wait for their freedom.
The Emancipation Proclamation applied only to Confederate states. The Radical Republicans (Anti-slavers) controlled Congress throughout the Civil War and stiffened Lincoln’s position to make the War about Slavery rather than Union alone.
