Why did you say it?

Uh, because it's true, isn't it? The old M115 8 inch towed howitzer weighed 31,870 pounds - 15 tons and change. If you have access to a decent road system, fine. If you don't, you're out of beer. The only helicopter in the world that can lift it - minus ammo and crew - is the old Soviet Mil Mi-26. Evene then it could lift it very far even on a cool day at sea level. (the Sikorsky CH-53K could probably barely lift it if it didn't have any fuel or crew and even then, it wouldn't get out of ground effect). It just can't be expeditionary - it's too dang heavy.

Your whole thrust seemed to be that towed guns are best/self-propelled aren't. I don't agree. We are in an entirely new era and combat systems must be fast, mobile and agile.

The large towed stuff needs to be relegated to the museums where they belong.

I note that you still haven't said anything about your experience in artillery. If you haven't any grounding in the real thing, what good are your opinions on the subject? If you aren't totally broken down. maybe you should sign up and spend a little time learning about this stuff first hand..

15 tons for towed artillery is lighter than the same size self-propelled.

Towed artillery is *always* lighter, always able to be carried further by helicopter and cargo jet/turbo-prop aircraft than will self-propelled artillery.

Towed artillery will *always* require less maintenance than self-propelled artillery, and will always have more flexibility (e.g. pull up a different truck to tow if one truck breaks down).

No. Towed artillery is lighter than self-propelled. Citing *weight* as your logic for towed artillery being bad is silly and...uninformed.

Yup. And the bigger towed stuff is unusable on a modern battlefield. Simple fact.

All your oversized towed stuff will just end up as a lawn ornament if front of the enemy’s VFW halls.

At least I know what sizes can be towed. Good luck figuring that one out.
