stl's are one of many modeling formats, check out: MeshLab, a free and open source cross-platform application for visualizing, processing and converting three-dimensional meshes to or from the STL file format.  works sweet!  here's the grip.stl file screenshot:

Put the files in Rhino and it will translate for you into a 2D print of the plans.

Any good CAD software can open the files, and present different view angles for printing. Cheap CAD software is available for download. I also have the files, and they can be modified for improved versions.
