WASHINGTON: South Korea's president on Wednesday proposed an international park on the tense border with North Korea as part of a peace initiative to bring down soaring tensions in the region.
"The Demilitarized Zone must live up to its name, a zone that strengthens the peace, not undermines it," President Park Geun-Hye told a joint meeting of the US House of Representatives and Senate.
"It is with this vision in mind that I hope to work towards an international park inside the DMZ. It will be a park that sends a message of peace to all of humanity," she said.
The proposal, while vague in detail, marks a shift in tone from the newly elected conservative leader who vowed a day earlier with President Barack Obama to take a hard line after months of soaring tensions with North Korea.
The most visible symbol of cooperation between North and South Korea -- the Kaesong industrial park inside the impoverished communist side -- has been suspended amid the democratic South's fears for its citizens' safety.
"I call on America and the global community to join us in seeking the promise of a new day," Park said.

Dennis Rodman Park?
This, coming so soon after NK basically killed the shared work city about a month or two ago?
Her father would’ve proposed a mortar barrage, followed by an airstrike. I knew the man.
NK threatens to annililate them and they counter with a peace park?
In other words: "America, cough up the money to pay for the damn thing so I can go down in history as a peace maker".
Madam Park, you pay for it, build it and police it yourself.
Leave America out of your costly, stupid peace plans that are doomed to fail.
a peace park...with a regime which uses entire families in gruesome military bioweapons experiments?!
Kumbaya.
....are these people for real?
Is the President of South Korea a flippin’ DEMOCRAT or a RINO?
Yeesh!
Have at it fool, just don’t include the USA in on your foolish sucker game.
You can bet that, if the “peace park” *were* built in the DMZ, Pyongyang would have at least five artillery batteries permanently trained on it within the week.
Real peace won’t come to the Korean peninsula while anyone in the current regime still draws a breath.
South Korea keeps proposing things they know the northern leaders can never agree to, just to prove a point I think.
More appeasement. That will work. After all, it has worked so well. /spit
Must be cemetery of some kind.
