Now China Says It May Own Okinawa, Too

US Sale Of Armed Drones To Japan And South Korea Would Transform Tensions In The Pacific China's top newspaper on Wednesday published a call for a review of Japan's sovereignty over the island of Okinawa -- home to major US bases -- with the Asian powers already embroiled in a territorial row.
The lengthy article in the People's Daily, China's most-circulated newspaper and the mouthpiece of the ruling Communist party, argued that the country may have rights to the Ryukyu chain, which includes Okinawa.
The island is home to major US air force and marine bases as well as 1.3 million people, who are considered more closely related to Japan in ethnic and linguistic terms than to China.
The authors of the article, two scholars at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, considered China's top state-run think-tank, said the Ryukyus were a "vassal state" of China before Japan annexed the islands in the late 1800s.
"Unresolved problems relating to the Ryukyu Islands have reached the time for reconsideration," wrote Zhang Haipeng and Li Guoqiang, citing post-World War II declarations that required Japan to return Chinese territory.
The article also repeated Chinese government arguments for China's historical claims over a set of tiny uninhabited islets in the East China Sea known as Diaoyu in Chinese and Senkaku in Japanese.
The two nations have stepped up a war of words over the dispute in recent months, with Beijing's vessels regularly entering the waters around the Tokyo-controlled islands, stoking fears of armed conflict.

Plus the Japanese have carrier experience. It’s not recent but it is experience.
Why do we have to go to Fascism to trade with Communists?
Because if you concede that our Leaders have the right to skim the profits from imports, you are not free are you? You are owned. But hey, if anyone really believes that tariffs help the market, feel free to send me a dollar for every ten you spend next year on Chinese products. At least 10% of the money you spend will go to a real American.
Tariffs are foolish, just another tax scheme for the politicians to skim from.
If you really want Americans to have Jobs, ban the EPA. Not only will you save Billions, Americans will be once again able to compete with foreign markets.
And jobs will magically "move" back to America.
Given half a chance, America will produce more for less with a superior product than any other nation out there.
But With the EPA on your back, you cannot light a fire to get warm in a snowstorm.
The EPA and the Federal Government is your Job loss. China is just filling the void that the Government Goons created. If you nuked China into a smoking hole, you would still have your Buy American problem.
The "Buy American" mantra just reminds me of the baying of sheep. It is a rabbit trail that the Government is glad to promote because it keep you from addressing the real problem. "Buy American" is like taking an aspirin for a gunshot wound.
The 1st United States Congress, wanting a straightforward tax that was not too onerous and easy to collect, passed the Tariff of 1790. Signed into law by Washington himself.
My son’s one of those Marines stationed there. He also thinks he owns that island. LOL.
Is it safe?
The Chinese are the #1 importer of irradiated metal - a recent shipment of kitchenware was denied entry because it exceeded radiation standards in a random check. How many were let in because they were not randomly checked? If they can make a profit on 9 shipments and eat the loss of the 1 shipment sent back - they will do so. Personally I think that the idea we are catching 10% is an over estimation.
The Chinese routinely slip industrial chemicals into consumer products if they mimic a more expensive ingredient. Two Mexican children died from eating toothpaste from china.
The Chinese imported pet snacks that killed many U.S. pets. Is saving $1 or two on pet snacks worth the risk to your pet?
Shirts come from Indonesia, Vietnam and Latin America. We can only do business with those retailers who avoid China; this means staying away from Hobby Lobby and KMart, and not buying GM cars. Ever.
Please, Clinton was sooooo the 90’s. You’re showing your age by blaming our 21st Century problems on that conman.
My father shed blood on Okinawa in 1945. A teeny corner of it belongs to my family.
I’m willing to sell my share to some Chinese 1%’er grown fat on WalMart profits.
Go on your merry way, bridge is out, buying popcorn.
They would do well to touch-up their damage-control procedures.
Seems China is jealous of North Korea taking all the madman headlines...
bump
Yikes! China is really pushing it.
As I recall General Lemay and the Pacific Army Air Force permanently erased all those old claims to Okinawa quite some time ago. Once it gets used as a weapon and American lives get used to destroy it NOBODY else owns it. I’ve seen this develop in the Asian news in past months and it’s all contrived to keep the far east pot stirred. As with the middle east this asian bunch just can’t stand to shut up and do something productive.
Quemoy and Matsu redux: pushing buttons to see what response they get.
Nice! I'll trade you for my piece of the True Cross...
There's no such thing as an "American" or "Chinese" computer. All use components from everywhere.
The official name is Aztlan Pacifico.
I remember from my childhood of reports that Quemoy was routinely shelled by the commies. That was back in the 50's.
The First Taiwan Straits Crisis 11 August 1954 - 01 May 1955
During the First Taiwan Straits Crisis the Peoples Liberation Army launched heavy artillery attacks on the offshore island of Quemoy after the US lifted its blockade of Taiwan, making possible Nationalist attacks on mainland China.
The Truman Administration had resisted calls by hard-liners to "unleash Chiang Kai-shek." But shortly after his inauguration, on 02 February 1953 President Eisenhower lifted the US Navy blockade of Taiwan which had prevented Chiang's force from attacking mainland China. During August 1954 Chiang moved 58,000 troops to Quemoy & 15,000 to Matsu. Zhou En-lai declared on 11 August 1954 that Taiwan must be liberated. On 17 August 1954 the US warned China against action against Taiwan, but on 03 September 1954 the Communists began an artillery bombardment of Quemoy, and in November, PLA planes bombed the Tachen Islands.
On 12 September 1954 the US Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) recommended the possibility of using nuclear weapons against China. And on 23 November 1954 China sentenced 13 US airmen shot down over China in the Korean War to long jail terms, prompting further consideration of nuclear strikes against China.
Despite domestic political pressure, President Eisenhower refused to bomb mainland China or use of American troops to resolve the crisis. At the urging of Senator Knowland, the United States signed the Mutual Defense Treaty with the Nationalist government on Taiwan on 02 December 1954.
I visited one of Chiang Kai-shek's palaces in Kaohsiung, Taiwan 1966.
