I dont pretend to have all the answers, President Obama told Ohio State students at their commencement on Sunday. Im not going to offer some grand theory on a beautiful day like thisyou guys all have celebrating to do. Im not going to get partisan, either, because thats not what citizenship is about.
President Obama, stressing the theme of citizenship, said he would ask two things from the class of 2013to participate and to persevere. After all, your democracy does not function without your active participation. At a bare minimum, that means voting, eagerly and often.
Unfortunately, youve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity thats at the root of all our problems; some of these same voices also doing their best to gum up the works. Theyll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices, the president told the graduates. Because what they suggest is that our brave and creative and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we cant be trusted. We have never been a people who place all of our faith in government to solve our problems; we shouldnt want to. But we dont think the government is the source of all our problems, either.
