The US Senate on Monday passed a bill aimed at ending tax-free shopping on the internet but the move looks set to face fierce opposition before it becomes law.
The Marketplace Fairness Act, which has cross-party supporter and the backing of powerful retailers, would give states the power to require retailers with sales over $1m to collect state and local sales taxes for online purchases.

Taxing agencies are looking at some $11 billion in new revenue. I suspect they will be scrambling to find new things to spend this on.

I’m glad my senator Ron Johnson (R) voted Nay.
I expected Tammy Baldwin (D) to vote yea, and she did.

To be accurate - brick and mortar places want online outfits to COLLECT sales tax (for every sales tax jurisdiction in the country). B&M stores only collect for ONE jurisdiction.
Fairness, my a$$.
The consumers are responsible for remitting the applicable sales taxes for online orders. I fail to see fairness in forcing online retailers to send checks to up to 1900+ jurisdictions, in lieu of their consumers following the established law (which already taxes internet purchases).
This is only fair for the likes of Amazon or Walmart, which already have to deal with so many jurisdictions due to their B&M presence.
JMO, natcherly!

Barry was an alcoholic.
In the 60s and 70s I used to party with his son and daughter at Catalina and Barry was drunk on a yacht the entire weekend.

Wow. Just wow.
What is the point of taking over the Senate in 2014 -- likely -- with votes like this.

At every increase in taxes, people buy less. More and more burden on the economy and more and more government borrowing. When it all comes down, the country will be remade by chaos, if nothing else.

Get rid of the ones that voted for this! My Senator Cornyn voted “not voting”. Is he not there or is he just a big chicken?

In this case yes since the ruling was geared toward state legislatures and not Congress. Only Congress has the authority to regulate interstate commerce and not the state legislatures.

In part, they'll spend it on devising more ways to take fees and taxes from us and hiring more socialists to watch taxpayers and collect the fees and taxes.
