Senior scientists have criticised the “appalling irresponsibility” of researchers in China who have deliberately created new strains of influenza virus in a veterinary laboratory.
They warned there is a danger that the new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing millions of people.
Lord May of Oxford, a former government chief scientist and past president of the Royal Society, denounced the study published today in the journal Science as doing nothing to further the understanding and prevention of flu pandemics.
“They claim they are doing this to help develop vaccines and such like. In fact the real reason is that they are driven by blind ambition with no common sense whatsoever,” Lord May told The Independent.
“The record of containment in labs like this is not reassuring. They are taking it upon themselves to create human-to-human transmission of very dangerous viruses. It’s appallingly irresponsible,” he said.
The controversial study into viral mixing was carried out by a team led by Professor Hualan Chen, director of China’s National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory at Harbin Veterinary Research Institute.
Professor Chen and her colleagues deliberately mixed the H5N1 bird-flu virus, which is highly lethal but not easily transmitted between people, with a 2009 strain of H1N1 flu virus, which is very infectious to humans.
When flu viruses come together by infecting the same cell they can swap genetic material and produce “hybrids” through the re-assortment of genes. The researchers were trying to emulate what happens in nature when animals such as pigs are co-infected with two different strains of virus, Professor Chen said.

The Chinese government is short-sighted, greedy, corrupt, and not very bright. That’s why that nation is the most environmentally toxic on Earth. Their soil is so fouled by industrial pollutants that most of the vegetables and livestock they grow are considered unfit for human consumption by Western standards. Add to that the fact that they have billions of disgruntled, dirt-poor peasants, most of whom are males because of their disastrous one-child policy. The people there are beginning to realize that they are the victims of self-genocide. The Chinese government created this virus to eliminate their own surplus population, because their iron grip on the population is starting to slip away. They intend to hide away in their secure bunkers until it plays itself out, as plagues always do. But it won’t work.
It’ll be just like Edgar Allen Poe’s classic work “The Masque Of The Red Death”. The elites will be among the first to get got. Watch and see.

To some in here that makes China a paradise. No environmental regulations and businesses are free to pour whatever crap they want into the air, water, and soil.
In 1917 during the flu pandemic, Gunnison Colorado completely shut down all access to the town for 2 weeks. They didn’t have a single case of the flu but nearby towns lost a lot of people.

That’s true, but bio has the most potential for causing the most casualties. Imagine something staff-like but carried like a flu. Scary, eh?

1. China shouldn’t be manufacturing for so many other nation.
2. The damage from pollution is usually exaggerated. Not all soil in China is so toxic.
3. Environmental laws were and are selectively enforced in the USA (e.g., pollution drained into US lakes and rivers already outlawed but unenforced against big, government-linked corporates). There was much corruption and still is (e.g., American-based manufacturers of products on foreign soil pushing for environmentalist regs against manufacturing in the USA.
